Important: Logan River closed to crabbing and prawning

This probably has to be made a sticky on several forums Phil - very important that this message is heeded

    *Queensland Government*
    *Department of Agriculture and Fisheries*
    *Media Release*
    9 December 2016

The Logan River is now closed to the commercial and recreational take of
crustaceans as Biosecurity Queensland continues to respond to an outbreak
of white spot disease (WSD) in prawns.

Chief Biosecurity Officer Jim Thompson said tests had confirmed the
presence of the WSD virus in wild prawns from the river.

“We are moving quickly to reduce the chance of the virus spreading any
further through locally-caught wild prawns, crabs or worms,” he said.

“Any movement of green, uncooked crustaceans taken from this area would
pose a real risk for moving the virus beyond the Logan River.”

The Logan River is now closed to the take of these species from the Jabiru
and Luscombe Weirs in the west to the mouth of the river in the east.

The movement control order restricts any movement of crabs, worms and
prawns out of the defined area. Fin fishing and boating is still allowed.

Dr Thompson said he understood that this may impact on the plans of local
    fishers over the holiday period.

“However in this situation, we are obliged to take all possible steps to
reduce the chance of spread,” he said.

“Disinfection and destocking of ponds at aquaculture farms on the Logan
River has been ongoing since last week when the outbreak of WSD had first
    been detected.

“I continue to emphasise that infected prawns do not pose any human health
risk, and despite this latest development there will be no impact on the
supplies of prawns for the holiday season.”

Aquaculture operators and fishers should report any unusual signs in prawns
and other crustaceans to Biosecurity Queensland on 13 25 23.

    White Spot Disease
Australia and New Zealand Standard Diagnostic Procedures
    INTRODUCTION
    Aetiology
White spot disease (WSD) of crustaceans is caused by infection with white spot syndrome virus (WSSV),a member of the Whispoviridae. Clinical disease is more frequently observed in farmed prawns than wild prawns. WSSV is considered exotic to Australia and New Zealand and is notifiable to the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE).
Australia has extensive populations of wild and farmed penaeid prawns, and detection of WSSV in Australia may have adverse trade implications for the Australian fishing and aquaculture industries as well as environmental and social impacts. Importation of live prawns into Australia is banned, and imported green prawns may be used only for human consumption at this time.
    Epidemiology
WSSV was first reported in both Taiwan and People's Republic of China (PRC) in 1992. Subsequently, it has spread throughout the prawn farming areas of Asia from Pakistan in the west to Korea in the north and Indonesia in the southeast. In 1999, the disease was introduced to Central America and has since spread throughout the Americas from the United States of America (USA) to Peru. The spread ofWSSV has been predominantly associated with the movement of live infected animals. It has been proven in Australia and elsewhere that frozen commodity prawns can contain viable WSSV. NO SHIT SHERLOCK !!!!!!!!!! BEEN TELLING YOU FOR YEARS !!!!!!!

Myself and many others told everyone we could about this when Australia first started importing this shit from overseas. But did Bio-Security listen… NO ! Some ####ed up trade agreement between governments has now put our whole industry and reputation at risk. Sometimes I wonder why Govt types fail to see the bleeding obvious ???

Interesting.... the ABC report on Thursday states "Australia's aquaculture industry confident white spot prawn disease has not spread to wild stock "..... and on Friday ( 24 hrs later ) .. " TEST results have confirmed white spot disease in wild prawns recently collected from the Logan River "..... SERIOUSLY !!!!!!http://www.abc.net.au/.../source-of-prawn-virus.../8103722 mind-blowing........ the devastation caused to the industry will be huge and the damage to our reputation almost irreparable, along with this will come job losses. This is seriously more damaging than the Fire Ant situation . Leanne Donaldson MP ( Fisheries Minister ) needs to jump all over this NOW !!!!!!

I can confirm that it looks very much like white spot disease is now in our local bait supplies. See attached pic of a locally caught bait prawn purchased from a tackle shop. Fisheries /Biosecurity QLD will need your help and co-operation to stop the spread - Tackle shop proprietors with bait product from the Logan River (especially from the past few weeks) who suspect it is infected should take it off the shelves and ring Biosecurity QLD 13 25 23 or the Emergency Animal Disease Watch Hotline on 1800 675 888. Perhaps everyone should consider using lures or fish flesh instead of prawn bait for a while.....

This could get very messy very quick. Is there a solution to erredicate it?

Wouldn't it be prudent to get every prawn trawler capabable of working these rivers in there to smash the population numbers down as much as possible to reduce the available host numbers then restock later?

Big call Phil saying it has potential to be worse than the Red Imported Fire Ant (RIFA) as 80 people have been killed in the US from RIFA. Just saying...........

Thanks.... I was of course referring to the Australian conditions and issues. I am just trying to highlight the severity of the problem and potential outcomes.

And I must edit the Ministers name, apparently we had a chneg of Fisheries Ministers a couple of weeks ago... Bill Byrne is the new man in the job.

NOW, for those concerned and want to be kept in the loop. the following link is to subscribe to Fisheries notifications, alerts and newsletters... have a look and sign up for what specific items you want to be kept informed about.

    Heads need to roll........ simple:-
'Nearly half' of imported raw prawns were likely infected with white spot disease, senators hear
    By Anna Vidot
    Updated yesterday at 14:53
    First posted yesterday at 14:45
Australian Agriculture Department officials have estimated that nearly half of all imported raw prawns were infected with white spot disease before imports were suspended in January.
The officials told a Senate Estimates hearing in Canberra on Wednesday that six importers supplied "the vast majority" of the contaminated prawns.
The Department has since revoked their import permits and approvals.
White spot disease in prawns is highly contagious, lethal to crustaceans and has reduced prawn farm productivity by up to 40 per cent overseas.
"We have made a referral to the CDPP [Commonwealth Director of Public Prosecutions], to pursue charges and further referrals are being considered," the Department's head of biosecurity, Lyn O'Connell, told Estimates.
Contaminated raw prawn imports have been blamed for an outbreak of white spot in Queensland's Logan River and Moreton Bay.
Logan River prawn farms will remain shut down for one year, in an effort to contain the outbreak.
While departmental officials said the source of the outbreak may never be known, they are still working on the assumption the virus can be eradicated.
    Testing failed detection
LNP Senator Barry O'Sullivan said the outbreak "represents a catastrophic collapse" of Australia's biosecurity arrangements and the so-called risk-based approach to raw prawn imports which involved testing a percentage of prawns at the border.
Agriculture Department investigations revealed that a number of importers engaged in the "deliberate subversion" of those processes, including deliberately mislabelling prawns as other product to avoid testing.
Investigations also revealed that white spot testing at the border failed to properly detect infected prawns.
Under more sensitive testing at the Australian Animal Health Laboratory, a large percentage of raw prawns that were initially cleared at the border were subsequently found to be infected with white spot.
"The estimation that we have is that nearly half of the prawns imported into Australia were positive for white spot syndrome," departmental official Tim Chapman told the senators.
"Obviously it is unacceptable to us."
Agriculture Minister Barnaby Joyce announced in May that the Commonwealth Government would allocate $20 million to prawn farmers in the Logan River, who must cease farming for 12 months.
Some of that will be paid back by the prawn farming industry through an agreed levy on production.
But Labor's shadow agriculture spokesman Joel Fitzgibbon accused Mr Joyce of being "missing in action" on the issue.
"He saw political opportunity in Johnny Depp's dogs, an issue that was already being adequately handled by the department, but when it comes to this serious biosecurity breach which is so seriously impacting on prawn farmers in this country, Barnaby Joyce is nowhere to be seen," he told Parliament.
