GME AE312 450 long VHF Antenna ground dependent

Does anyone have one of these and can provide feedback on range compared to typical 1800 long version
Looking at smaller option for the ally boat

Range will not typically be as good. As with any VHF signal the actual range will depend on who you are talking to - more specifically how high their antenna is. These antennas from memory (been a while) are most likely only a unity gain antenna whereas the 6 footer will be a 3db gain antenna

This is about the best article I could find that doesn't launch off into a heap of maths (most of which I have forgotten through either lack of use or old age - I've forgotten which) that describes the principle differences between high, mid and low gain antennas.
