I have the 7408 as well as an an older garmin 750s in the boat. I run the 7408 as a split screen sounder and the older unit a just a gps or gps sounder combo, any way i run it this way to try and maximise the screen usage on the newer 7408 sounder.
I like the garmins and i do like the touch screens as long as you dont have wet fingers or get spray inside the cabin.
My only complaint with mine would be that at speed(20kts+) i get a better reading from the older unit and transducer as i have the chirp300 w sidescan transducer on the 7408 and as they are a long skinny transducer and i find i get a lot of interference with mine , i probably shouldn't have bothered with side scan as i dont really use it in my style of fishing but i did like the idea at the time.
I get clear sounder returns to at least 130m when travelling less than 10kts.
Anyway i am happy with it so far , so that my two cents i hope it help with your decision
