Very sad news that the missing and now recovered diver off Brisbane was the QLD fisheries director Andrew Thwaites. Andrew was doing a great job in the fisheries and making some big changes for the better of QLD. He was passionate, well educated and very open minded to ensure everyone had a good say in the QLD fishery. RIP Andrew.



Air-and-sea search for missing diver in Moreton Bay

TRIBUTES have poured in for Fisheries Queensland Director Andrew Thwaites, whose body was recovered yesterday after he failed to surface following a a scuba dive off Moreton Island.

Mr Thwaites had served as the director of Fisheries Queensland since January 2011.
Fisheries Minister Leanne Donaldson expressed her concern and support for staff and family and friends of the popular marine scientist.

Fisheries Queensland Director Andrew Thwaites died in a scuba diving incident.
Fisheries staff members have been offered counselling.


In a touching post on Facebook, the Mackay Recreation Fishing Alliance (MRFA) expressed its sympathy for Mr Thwaites’ family.



“MRFA worked with Andrew and was a pleasure to deal with. Our thoughts are with his family and colleagues at Fisheries. He will be sadly missed.”

Moreton Bay and Surrounds Sportfishing also expressed their support for the 44-year-old’s family and friends.


EARLIER: POLICE have located the body of Fisheries Queensland Director Andrew Thwaites who failed to surface after a scuba dive off Moreton Island.
His body was found after a huge air-and-sea search for the 44-year-old after a dive from a commercial charter at Henderson Rocks about 2pm yesterday. ( 10th August )

Fisheries Minister Leanne Donaldson has been briefed and expressed her concern and support for staff and family and friends of the popular marine scientist.
Acting Director General Department of Agriculture and Fisheries Malcolm Letts has confirmed the missing diver was Mr Thwaites.
