    Big fresh pillies

    Hi everyone,

I'm heading to the Bunker group soon.

I was wondering if anyone could tell me who their preferred supplier is of large, fresh pilchards?

We'll be taking fillets and squid which I find easy to source however decent large IQF pillies can be a hurdle in my experience.

    Cheers

    TK

These are the best places I have dealt with over a lot of years, with quality being A1 in most cases. I would phone whoever is closest first and ask if they actually have big ones on hand as they can be tough to get this time of year.

Mossops @ Cleveland, had 4kg in graded boxes, Small Medium and Large.

we got mediums, they were good quality.

Most fish markets should have (or can get) large, food grade IQF Pilchards in a 10KG box, they should be around the same price as normal bait blocks per kilo.

I'm glad you asked tailorkid, I was about to put up the same post.
I've tried 3 different bait and tackle outlets who unfortunately stock Tweed bait and their IQF Pillies are crap. They are very small and have skin falling off. The 2kg Tweed Bait blocks are perfect Pillies but they go soggy too quickly for an all day fish or multi day trip.

    I hear ya!

As kids we always used rock salt or similar to try and firm the old pillies up a bit.....$ were pretty tight then......who am I kidding still are😜
