Thread: Colorado Owners. heads-up

    Thumbs down Colorado Owners. heads-up

The rubber covering on the gear stick knob on my 2013 Collie had a small crack in it a little while ago.

It eventually turned into a hole and then a piece came out.

So it is time for a new knob. Looked around for aftermarket types.

I remove all old rubber from alloy knob, but can't for the life of me unscrew the alloy from the shaft.

After a visit to Holden, I found out why. It comes as one piece. Somehow glued on ????

The good news, this is covered under warranty... bad news, warranty ran out 2,000k's ago. Still within the 3 years, but

So most after-market knobs are between 25 and 45 dollars.

    Holden replacement part................. $318.00.

So, Collie owners,,, check your rubber knobs and if any deterioration is occurring, pop into ya dealer and get a new one under warranty.

What were the engineers thinking when they designed this type of item ????

Glue is cheaper than machining a thread?

At least they've got cheaper then lol. The gear knob for my ra rodeo was over $900......needless to say I went to Supercheap and glued a cheap one on for about $35. Back then I think the prices were set by Isuzu but it's obscene what they think they can charge for small items.

A similar "feature" on my Hilux, the gear stick is actually 2 pieces, with some sort of molded rubber between the two bits, over time, it's common for the rubber to crumble, making the gear stick all wobbly, the fix? replace the gear stick, at great cost, after you figure out how to remove it from the gearbox!

Why not get a thread machined onto the old lever to match an aftermarket knob???

The knob is easily replaced but the vinyl hood is another issue altogether.

    OK, research has paid off.

Apparently the alloy knob is " pressed " on.

The black gear stick can be removed from the box by unscrewing an allen key.

The knob can be pressed / whacked off.

Then you can either machine a thread on or press a new knob on.

Great news for me as I have ordered the new knob before I found out about the issue.

AND, Eddie.... if you car has less than 6 drink holders and 4 glove boxes in the front, you need to upgrade to a Colorado
