    Filleting knives recommendation - gift

Hi all, I hope no one minds that I've signed up to ask a quick question...

I want to get hubby some filleting knives for Christmas. He currently uses a cheap Ikea one and my Globals. He does a lot of catch and release fishing so the only fish he keeps are beach fish like whiting, bream, and sometimes tailor. I have no idea about the brands, size, style etc that would be suitable for these type of fish so any help/advice would be greatly appreciated. I wanted to get a dedicated filleting knife and a couple for general purpose as he uses his filleting knife for everything which has worn it out pretty quick. I'm getting sick of the swearing every time he brings fish home for dinner! So.. any suggestions??

    Thanks!

    Hi Shannon,
This is a great set if you're looking at spending a little more.
The top knife is a great skinning knife.

    Hey Shannon,

Sounds like a good Christmas present!

I bought a couple of Swibo knives off a eBay seller in the NT.

Swibo are owned by Wenger, are Swiss made and are bloody sharp.

I use their 7" flexible narrow blade one for filleting and I use their 7" butchers knife for cutting through bones/cutting bait.

Also, if you're going to spend the money on a good set of knives, it's not a bad idea to look at:

    1. A good sharpening stone - those pull through types are not as good for the blade long term and,

    2. A good sheath - I have a canvas one that rolls up and fits 3 knives and the sharpener.

I rate the F Dick knives as holding an edge much better than Swibo.

If you really want to spoil him, splash out and get him one of these.

Are you recommending the Victory filleting knives on that site, Chris?
Note to self: Don't argue with an idiot. They will only bring you down to their level and beat you with experience....

I've got 4 good filleting knives of various length and flex, but my favourite is still my Global Chef's knife. I like the strong sharp blade that cuts through bone. I now use my filleting knives only for skinning.

No Grant, I have vitorinox and fdick knives, personal preference. The shop has a bunch of brands of knives at reasonable prices.

Just find Swibo is over priced even though its a vitorinox made knife.
