    Gold Coast whiting

Hi guys, heading down coast for week looking at chasing some of the thumper whiting down that way! However I haven't fished there before! Just wondering if anyone has any rough locations, tides etc that may be able too assist in landing a few! Also how far up the rivers they get them! Had a search and there's a few blokes here that seem to get them! Pm me if you prefer,

    Thanks in advance!

The better fish down the coast seem to come at night. Have a good look at the Nerang on Google Earth - look for areas that show good sand bank formations - any of these can hold fish at times. Opposite the council chambers as mentioned is a fairly reliable one - if the fish are on you can tell where the best parts of the bank are from the boats. Most of the regulars down there swear by bloodworms for bait but we generally get enough on yabbies which are readily available on the banks out in the Broadwater. Certainly doesn't hurt to have some worms though just in case they are being fussy. Typically we would try to have a low tide late in the afternoon to pump bait then make our way up river and fish. Most times we stay all night with fish being a possibility at any time apart from around the tide changes where they usually go quiet for a bit. The upside to the quiet tide change is having a crack at a jack under a jetty - good gear required - we've been toasted plenty of times on 30 pound braid. A lot of the guns will simply keep moving until they find fish. Given we generally go down for the night we typically don't bother running around all over the shop though. The fish can be extremely tentative biters at times with a good amount of free spool required for them to get the bait down at the lightest of touches. Plenty of blokes do catch them on mono but I have better success using light braid with about 5 metres of mono for the sinker to run on and 2 kilo leader. There are plenty of speed restriction areas up the river (though sometimes you wonder with the way some drive) and the police do patrol at times.
