    Boating in hervey bay

    Hi guys,

Wondering what boating attractions there are in Hervey Bay.

Where does one go to find whales? Turtles? Dugongs? Dolphins?

What are the best on water attractions besides fishing?

What are the best beaches or places to pull up and see things in the area by boat?

Any advice from those in the know would be appreciated.

Whales - your best bet is Platypus Bay. Sometimes they'll come to you whilst you're anchored/drifting, sometimes you'll see them and give chase (keeping distance). Also look for the whale watching boats, as they attract them. They're normally out there most days in the northern bay.

Turtles and dolphins can be found anywhere, really. Watch the drop offs along inside Fraser at dusk for pods of dolphin.

Dugong around the corner from Rooney's, or sometimes down the bottom of the Straits.

Don't forget the small Blacks will be cruising the shallow grounds between Wathumba and Rooney's when it warms a bit, so look out for them. There's a small wreck that holds lots of sea snakes up near Rooney's ledge in the shallows, too.

Great stretch of beach right along inside of Fraser from Moon Point north. Check out Wathumba Ck mouth, too, and explore the creek itself. Plenty of great things in the bay.

I forgot a couple more, mate.

Between Rooneys and Wathumba there's a decent sand hill. Anchor your boat and go and climb it. Fair way up, but the view is worth it. Most days you'll be the only one within cooey, which makes it even better.

Also, keep an eye out in the shallows for Devil Rays. You can get the odd school slapping around in the shallows. They're awesome creatures and safe to dive with. Plenty of rays in the shallows near Wathumba creek, too.

If you're really lucky, you might see the odd hammerhead cruising the shallows, too. The bities normally appear after dark in the shallower grounds, but sometimes they're there in the day.

Such a great bay, and a heap of life/variety. Let us know how you go.
