Re: Best 4 stroke for my 5.4 f Signature

So do I want a new or rebuilt tuktuk motor for my 540F...?

Seriously though, a rebuilt engine is fine IF it has been done properly. Millions of engines around the world have been rebuilt successfully, some in messy sheds, some in pristine workshops. If the person/s doing the work are competent the result will be as good or better than from factory. If they are not competent, it will fail soon enough. From my experience with automotive stuff, buying a rebuilt engine from someone you don't know would be a 50/50 gamble at best...

I saw an interesting pair of boat tests (fishing monthly, youtube) the other day. Two Streakers, 5700 with 115 CT and 6100 with the 135. The test was done on a dead flat Moreton Bay, and showed that the performance and economy of the two combos were near identical. No mention of the prop selection but quite interesting that the 135 managed the same economy pushing the larger boat. Conversely the 115 was only a few km/h slower top end despite a 20hp deficit.

    Haven't seen that test...
I saw the comparrison done with a 125 opti vrs the 115 ct on streaker boats, there wasn't much in that from memory. Opti, surprisingly came out slightly better ecconomoy, but the 115 ct had, ever so slight, better hole shot and top end. The main out come was the fact the gap has well lessoned between 2 and 4 stroke, the 125 opti was no slouch an an engine either.....

Hmmm I doubt you would want to be cornering too fast in that one

So apart from all the comedy, does old mate OP go for a heavier motor or lighter motor, which brand? Trim tabs, well, we all have been told how great they are and can help on the decision, but I never had them on any boat so can't comment.
I drive the boat I am in to the conditions, that is a big percentage of all boats and how they handle or feel, in my opinion.
From sailing boats, pelicans, skiffs , cats, 8 foot tinnies to tugs is my boating experience and been on a few ships, iron newcastle, prince/ curtis, wallarah..... as a ring in
What we are missing here is people with the same boat and what they have powering it.
All the side track is amusing tho, I have enjoyed my popcorn
The haines sigs are a nice riding boat, no doubt, stability, will always depend on the sea, no?
Ther was some good info in earlier posts, before it went awol :-)

Oh and I was watching a French review (with English voice over) of the Merc 115 Pro XS. That particular setup had auto trim incorporated (Merc OEM system). I didn't know that was offered on their lower HP models, perhaps a very recent introduction/update?

    Are those numbers right mate?
Anything doing 2.5 L/km is pretty poor and would be getting unbolted quick smart off my boat unless that's the consumption at full revs
2.5 Km/L I would be happy with at cruising speeds
    Maybe I'm reading it wrong

I seen something about this i gathered the auto trim was for either towing or at home while parked

Sorry folks, typo! Defintely all meant to be km/L

Gazza, from what was described in the video and the Mercury website, it is the same idea as Evinrude iTrim. I'm not sure how the iTrim system works, but Merc's Active Trim seems to be based upon GPS speed and rpm, just trims out as the boat gets faster. I hope there is a bit more to it than that though, as that is a rather crude approach...
