    Finally some DI Reds

With all this good weather i was eager to get out for a fish. With my boat being out of action getting new electronics i decided to give my mate a call Thursday night to see if he was keen for a overnight fish friday night. After a bit of convincing A plan was hatched and we decided to leave Friday mid morning. After a 1000 stops trying to get everything together we finally got to tin can bay around 2pm. We decided to head straight to the shelf area. About 60ks from the bar we ran over a bit of ground. It was not much but we decided to go back and have a look at it. First couple of drifts we picked up a few parrot and moari cod off it. On our last drift we decided to go for a bit longer. As we were reeling up to leave my mate hooked a solid fish. After a good fight a nice red came up. It was his first ever red and he was over the moon. We had one more drift but for few more hussar and parrot. It was getting late so we decided to make our way again so we could anchor at one my old spots to try chasing a few jobbies on jigs and some jacks at night. The arvo bite was not what we expected. It was very quite. We got a few jacks and other bits and pieces until it shut down. My mates wanted to stay and persist but weather was too good to stay on one spot and hope for fish to come. We headed north along the shelf and after a few hours of sounding finally ran over some ground worth stopping for. It was a nice little isolated rock which had few good fish sitting around it.First drift Peter hooked on to a solid fish. We called it for a red with the way it was fighting. I hooked up too but got smoked. After a good fight Peters fish finally came up. A 12 kg red. Not a bad start. We looked at the sounder and we could see a school of reds. I quickly rigged up and we went back for another drift. The minute my bait got to the bottom i was on. This thing was solid. I had the drag nearly locked up and it was pulling line. After a good fight a good red popped up. It was certainly a PB for me. We got the scales out and it went 14.4kg. Next drift Peter got smoked by a big red. This thing was easily bigger than mine. The inital hit nearly ripped the rod out of his hand. After losing a few fish the fishing slowed down on the spot. We decided to go searching again. After 2 hours of solid searching we couldnt find anything. The current seemed to have picked up too so we made the plan to go back to the spot we got reds and anchor on it. It took a few goes but we anchored right on the rock. (Thank god for electric anchors lol). As the boys were setting the anchor i dropped down and got a red straight up. We fished for a bit longer in the current picking up mixed reefies. I got sick of pulling up 24 oz snapper lead so decided to pull out the electrics. We fished till 12 and decided to go for a sleep for a bit.3 am i woke up and decided to try persisting with the current. I was using electrics due to current. First drop i hooked a nice school size red. The current seemed to have dropped out so went back to conventional gear. Next few drops saw me get another few reds while the boys were still sleeping. I tried to wake them up but they were fast asleep. Finally the boys got up and started fishing. The hussar seemed to have moved in and it drove us crazy. The current had also dragged our anchor away from the rock abit.We decided to pull anchor and do another drift but only picked up hussar. After that we went for another look in the 80-100 line with good weather and minimal current to try for some pearlies. We traveled 20ks searching but did not find any pearlies. Picked up random bits and pieces. By mid morning we decided to hit the red spot one more time to see if anything was biting. There was bigger shows on the sounder now so 2 of us decided to jig. We picked up a fair few AJ and rosey jobfish. The end of the drift my mate was reeling his jig back up when he got hit by a solid fish. It would have hit literally 15 meters under the boat. After a good fight came up a nice coronation trout. It was another species ticked of the list.By now we had enough fish so we decided to go for another search. After 2-3 hours of searching i found few new rocks. They did not produce this time but will give a go next trip.Around 2 we decided to call it a trip and head back home. It was a glass out coming back and the big gradey did 35 knots whole way back. All up it was a trip i been dreaming off for ages. Everything went perfect. Weather was good, the baits we had were good and timing was good. The fish were all caught on various Petackle flys so cheers SeanI have spent a considerable about of time sounding up that area and it finally paid off. Also like to thank Greg Lampret. If it wasn't for his dvd i would have never known what red fishing is.(also for putting up with all the questions i ask all the time, really appreciate you answering me. Credit goes to you mate.) Also like to thank Redhunter and Sean. Thanks for putting up with my questions.
Now im hooked. Cant wait to get my boat ready so i can go fish off DI and 1770.

    Re: Finally some DI Reds

Good report Shane, there the sort of reports that get the heart racing and wishing I was fishing.
Good old double Island, it challenges the best of us and at times I would come home screaming and yelling that I'm selling the boat.lol
But a trip like that would keep me going back for more.
Now you just have to find another 10 spots like that as it will clean out quickly.
    Cheers Mick.

    cheers mate.
Haha tell me about it. Few trips ago we found a school of reds after 6 hrs of sounding and we lost first one. I was ready to throw my mate out the boat. I was so upset lol.
Di is tough if you ask me 1770 way easier lol.
Once i get new boat ready il be doing more trips up there. From what i saw last trim around broomsfeild the country there is easy to find.

    Re: Finally some DI Reds

I still think 1770 can be tricky at times,I have seen people get just as frustated and poor results.
My first ever trip up there I only got 3 trout and mixed reef, but we had an old GPS that didn't mark out green zones so we were apprehensive
in dropping on good shows,a bit stupid now I look back but hey we all have done something stupid.
After fishing with someone like Keith aka Banana you appreciate just how much he has studied the area and techniques, just the same way Greg has DI.
The beauty of 1770 is the ability of having somewhere to hide at night and the endless amounts of red throat and trout.
It is certinaly a very fertile area and soooooo much country.
    After fishing D.I ,1770 is a breeze.
    Cheers Mick.

From what i saw mate 1770 simple. Theres lots more to do. Way more ground. If reds dont bite chase red throat trout and squid.
I am one that wont come back if i dont catch lol. Il stay a extra night if weather half decent. I was ready to stay di saturday night if we didnt get fish coz i got sick of going out there and not being able to fish all night due to rough weather and strong currents.
my last 2 trips in november to di we got hit by 2 storms at night. 80ks out and nothing we could do than sit on anchor n hold on. Longest nights of my life. That was wake up a big wake up call. I promised my self bom wind model showed green at night im not going. Hence the trip after 6 months.

Great report and well done with the catch. I am going to have to target some reds myself up that way. I run into your mate a fair bit at the Mooloolaba ramp.
