    Diesel Outboards

This has been brought up before but found this site which is interesting. Being made and tested in Italy.

How long before the belt breaks or the rubber teeth wear down that drives the prop?

    Re: Diesel Outboards

Little skipper, how long does your timing belt last in your car? 100,000kms or 1600hrs on average. So what's the difference on an outboard.

Most belts are made with kevlar and have auto tensioners.

I'd be happy with a belt drive even if it had a 500hr change interval.

That 200hp outboard sounds interesting. Whether or not it is actually practical will depend on how loud it is when running though.

    Re: Diesel Outboards

I saw a diesel outboard on a 17ft glass boat in the Brsibane river about 10 -12 years ago.

Thought it was a Tohatsu or similar name, could have been a yanmar ???

Given the technology these days with Common rail and Direct Injection, one would think a diesel outboard is not far away... I do see the weight being an issue.

Not that long ago I toyed with the idea of an inboard 283 or 289 V8 running on gas ( LPG ) for a 21ft Swiftcraft, had the gas tanks designed and all....

    Re: Diesel Outboards

There has been a few LPG conversions on petrol inboards, most work OK, my mate had one for a year or two, but at the moment there is no marine conversion kits, and everything just rusts to bits.

    Re: Diesel Outboards

i feel untill the US domestic market cries for a diesel outboard it will be limited to small euro or asian developers who cant/wont produce the numbers to see the engines grow, expand or be strong competitors. outboards have all kinds of advantages. but with small light turboed diesel inboards getting more popular. it might be longer than we think to see massive changes. i think the slow curve up of low weight, high performance 4 strokes will be this decades major push.

then again i could be and hope i am. wrong
