    Stripper guide placement

    Gday all,
I have a question for you, I should have this down pat, but Im not 100% sure.

I measure the stripper guide from the top of the reel seat to aprox 19 to 24inchs to the stripper giude, depending on the rod, overhead or spin, now is this the case? and is this the rule for short grips or split grips when the reel seat is close to the butt?

    Re: Stripper guide placement

Center of the reel seat and this is what i use to work things out,if im doing a 7ft spinner say 4to10lb ill use a 1.15 factor with 8 guides and divisor of 13.72 at 20 to 22 inches from reel seat center to the first guide, ive used the fuji concpet way of calculateing things from center of spool and reel angle to work out the distance to the first guide and it works out very much the same ,i hope this helps Cheers chris.

Butt Guide Distance from Center of Reel Seat
    Recommended Spacing Factors
    Fly Rods 28 to 35 in. Fly 1.05 / 1.10
    U/L Spin 18 to 25 in. U/L Spin 1.15 /1.20
    Medium Spin 22 to 28 in. Medium Spin 1.15 / 1.20
    Light Casting 16 to 24 in. Light Casting 1.10 / 1.15
    Boat & Troll 22 to 28 in. Boat & Troll 1.05 / 1.10
    Surf Cast 25 to 30 in. Surf Cast 1.15 / 1.20
    Surf Spin 28 to 36 in. Surf Spin 1.20 / 1.25
Determine the needed distance from the reel seat to the butt guide. Measure the distance from the tip to the butt guide. Choose one of the underlined factors for the type of rod you are building. Choose the number of guides you desire. Divide the distance from the tip to butt guide by the divisor that corresponds with the factor and number of guides you have chosen. The result of this calculation is the distance from the tip to the first guide. This number would normally be around 4 inches. Usually not less than 3' or more than 5". Some surf rods will use dimensions of more than 5", but that is usually the only exception. If the number is outside this range either change the factor being used, the number of guides, and, or the butt guide distance.
Once the proper distance from the tip to the first guide has been determined, multiply that dimension by the factor amount, the result of this is the distance to the second guide. Repeat this process again of multiplying the factor times the measurement of the previous guide. Continue until all of the guides are done. This may be easily done on a calculator that allows the use of a constant. Enter the factor as the constant, then times (X) the first guide dimension equals (=) , hit the (=) key the number of guides that you are using. Adding and subtotaling these results will give you the cumulative spacing from the tip to the butt guide.

    Note:
This formula is only a starting point for proper guide spacing. The dimensions may work well for your rod, or may need to be adjusted to fit your particular blank.

    Factor 1.05 1.10 1.15 1.20 1.25

    Re: Stripper guide placement

    Thanks Chriss,
Its more technical than what I do and its good info. I will give it ago. I use the dead lift technique, place the rod in a holder with the reel on at a 45deg, and have the rod bent at aprox full load 45deg aprox and sit back and see how all the guides look with the flow of the line to the rod bend of the rod and adjust to the guides to suit, its just the stripper placement that I get curious about being in the correct posi.
    Cheers
    Russ
