Fraser Island closed waters re-open
Fraser Island will re-open to fin fishing from midday this Monday 30 September, with the lifting of the island's annual fishing closure.
Queensland Boating and Fisheries Patrol (QBFP) Acting District Manager Geoffrey Fergusson said the closure was in place from midday 1 August to midday 30 September 2013 to assist the fish breeding cycle.
"During the closure, an area between Indian Head and Waddy Point is closed to the taking of all fin fish such as tailor," he said.
“The closure allows the fish to congregate during spawning and protects them during the vulnerable part of their life cycle.
“The annual closure is in place to ensure the sustainability of Queensland’s tailor fishery for future generations to enjoy.
“With the end of the closure, fishers can once again enjoy fishing throughout the island.”
QBFP officers will be patrolling the island to monitor the lifting of the closure.
