Commercial fisher pinched for crabbing offences

A Birkdale man has been fined $8000 and a conviction recorded in the Brisbane Magistrates Court for fisheries offences related to the commercial crab fishery.

Queensland Boating and Fisheries Patrol (QBFP) field officer James Hohenhaus said the man was a commercial fisher operating on Moreton Bay.

“QBFP conducted a search of the fisher’s commercial vessel at the Raby Bay boat ramp and found 222 blue swimmer crabs with the carapace (shell) separated from the body,” Mr Hohenhaus said.

“The crabs were concealed underneath legal crabs in the fish bins on the vessel.

“While there is no total catch limit for commercial catch of blue swimmer crabs, it is an offence to possess them with the shell missing, as it impedes measurement of the crabs.

"Offences like this are considered serious due to the impacts on the sustainability of the blue swimmer crab fishery should undersize crabs be taken by fishers."

Mr Hohenhaus said recreational fishers should also ensure they are aware of blue swimmer crab rules before dropping a pot.

“The same size and no take rules apply to recreational fishers as for commercial fishers when catching blue swimmer crabs,” he said.

“The minimum size limit is 11.5 cm, females are strictly off limits and the shell must still be attached to the crab unless the crab meat is for immediate consumption.

“Recreational fishers are also reminded that no more than four crab pots or dillies may be used per person, and they must have an identifying tag for the owner and be attached either to a float or a fixed object above high water.

“If we are to ensure the sustainability of this popular species, then both commercial and recreational fishers must abide by the rules.”

Kudos to Dept A F&F......WELL DONE

But on another note......as I read it.....according to the quoted word here...IN BOLD,
A float with all pertinent details is suffice ????
So NO duplicate details on the actual pots themselves ????

This is a question we have pondered for some time.......

    Thanks, Ray & Kerri.

"All crab apparatus must be attached by a rope to either a float or fixed object above the high water mark. "

"Floats or ropes need to be marked with your name and the apparatus marked with name and address."
"Crabbers should also make sure that pots are in a sufficient depth of water at all stages of the tide, ensuring marine animals are not exposed to the sun and unwanted crabs can be released alive."

Good pick up Ray. I'll inform FQ.

Above from media release ( because damn DAFF website is not working ) from Boating & Fisheries Patrol. 2012.

    Phil,
The DAFF website is being upgraded at present. Obviously a few issues but should be operational again soon.

I respect that business owners sometimes stretch their working hours, OH&S rules, pricing policy, even QA.
But I have no respect for these guys when they break the law. They destroy the environment directly to sustain their little self employed business.

Only $8k... And still gets to go crabbing for a living to pay the fine. (prob more incentive now to do it again to pay it) No wonder people rape and pillage our oceans without a care.

    Hi Ray and Kerri

There needs to be a tag on both the crab pot / dilly and the float / rope above high water. The tag on the crab pot / dilly must have the owner’s surname and address, and the float / rope must have the owner’s surname. More on crab gear rules can be found at http://www.daff.qld.gov.au/fisheries...s-and-lobsters

I think this is the first time I have seen fisheries respond to a question raised on this forum? It is good to see so thanks. Whilst we are at it I was trying to find fish ID info on DAFF but they were all blind links....can you assist?
