Charter booked out of Southport early July - What can I expect?

    Hola,

Got groupon tickets with For Reel Fishing Charters locked in for July 6 out of Southport Marina. Haven't been offshore in the dead of winter before. What can I expect other than freezing cold? What fish are on the bite around that time of year off Goldy? Snaps? Anything else?

Well I thought I would just have a look on their site and see their gallery and that would be a good indication of what they target and are getting and I saw this:-

and I don't recall seeing any other photos but if you have better eyesight than me look here:-

I fished the gravel patch this exact time last year (not on a charter) and we landed two cobia, one Spanish mackerel (apparently the odd one hangs around in winter? We got the shock of our lives - caught it bottom bouncing), and 7or 8 snapper/squire.

    Goodluck!!

we went out with them about this time last year and sad to tell you was not a very good trip.....
firstly boat was full of voucher holders whom had no experience on water whatsoever and even with kids around 10 yrs old on board , they did not do any welcoming or explanation on where safety gear was and we went out in 25-30 knot seas with about 3m seas with the boat i swear near broaching in the bar and no one was there to tell you to hold on or where the life jackets were...

pulled up on spot and hardly any speak on what to do with me baiting alot of persons rods and helping them out whilst most people were puking ..... 3 fish were pulled aboard the whole trip whilst the boat was rolling in big seas with waves breaking near over gunnels each swell. Most peaple stayed seated and deckie and captain stayed in cabin most of the time till it was time to go home ..... just lucky that we were the guys that got the three fish and got entertained by the lack of organisation , cause if i was puking, it would have been the worst day of my life.....

    hope your trip is better.

Sounds like the trip I went on with them , but unfortunately I had booked 3 trips with them on Scoopons and all were the same , 1 or 2 keepers for the whole boat of 22 people and the rest of the fish they were keeping were only good for bait. All they were doing was saving fuel money and just hung out at the bait grounds and off Surfers.
As Adam said hope your trip is better .

So it looks like they target Spanish mackerel and stunned mullet but from the sounds of other peoples experiences you are pretty much just going for an expensive boat ride for the day.

    Oh joy. Sounds great.

Oh well $60 a pop I guess you get what you pay for. Hopefully they're in a good mood or whatever it takes for them not to be tossers. Maybe I'll just take my own gear or something.

My old man got a voucher through groupon or something like that for $60. Was booked to go on the first week of June, got called up to say it has been cancelled, that's okay, we'll book another date for 19th June. They rang up to cancel again! Their answer was to rough and windy when the forecast for that day was only 10-15 knots with 1m seas. It was a beautiful day so we're booked for 27th but I got a feeling it'll be cancelled again! Not very good, just giving you a heads up.
