    Lnp increases beam trawling!

Does anyone else find anything abysmal in the below media statement just out of the McVeigh's office?

Beam trawling - the most destructive of all practices, after dynamite, and less damaging long-term than than cyanide!

I thought we came out of the dark ages on this sort of stuff decades ago!

Flood-hit Bundaberg fishers find relief with new trial

Commercial beam trawl fishers who were hard hit by flood damage to the Burnett River will now be able to access additional fishing areas as part of a new government trial.
Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry John McVeigh said flooding in the Burnett River earlier this year has meant fishers can no longer fish there effectively.
“Changes to the riverbed and general flood debris continue to impede commercial fishers accessing the area,” Mr McVeigh said.
“To help beam trawl fishers get back in business, the Newman Government has approved a trial opening of additional beam trawl fishing areas, as well as removal of the existing beam trawl seasonal closure in the Burnett River (from 31 August to 1 November).
“The removal of the seasonal closure will see equal access to the resource for both recreational and commercial fishers.
“The new fishing area is within the General Use Zone of the Great Sandy Marine Park between the northern bank of the Burnett River and the northern boundary at Rules Beach.
“These changes to fishing access would be for a trial period of two years, after which it will be reviewed based on the condition of the river and feasibility.”
Local commercial beam trawler Mr Reid Dick said the new fishing areas are a positive announcement.
“The floods really affected the areas in which I could fish, so extending the access will certainly help my business,” Mr Dick said.
Mr McVeigh said these changes do come with certain conditions to minimise impact on species of conservation interest as well as recreational fishing.
“Due to the new area being located near the Mon Repos turtle rookery, it will be mandatory for beam trawlers to install compliant turtle excluder devices in their nets,” he said.
“Beam trawl fishing and all other netting will remain prohibited in the town reach of the river (from the junction with Bundaberg Creek upstream to the western tip of Harriett Island), to allow for resource sharing with recreational fishing.
“There are currently six beam trawl licence holders in Bundaberg, supplying banana, greasyback and school prawns to the local community and interstate.
“It’s important that we support local business, and do what we can to get them back on their feet.”
To access the new fishing areas, commercial fishers will need to apply for a permit from Fisheries Queensland. No fees will apply.

    Re: Lnp increases beam trawling!

While I support the idea in general, I have reservations as to why a Government would not offset areas for recreational fishos after such events. Why not open up a green zone or two ?

If the Government are so inclined to support the local community, maybe the trawlers should be selling their product to the local market only.. ?

Maybe the Government should be cleaning out the river of flood debris and things.

The recreational fishery economic input in the Bundaberg / Burnett region far exceeds the commercial trawl input, so why not treat the rec fishos with the respect they deserve, instead of sucking up to a commercial enterprize, that when the folks got into it, knew the risks associated.

Cane growers, pro fishers etc all cry foul when weather etc affects them and expect the government to give them handouts and other support. When does the rec fisho get their fair share ?

We get green zones, seasonal closures, bag limits, size limits and more................. it's about time the government paid us back for OUR support.

Minister McVeigh needs to start rolling out the Artificial reefs.........now !

Is this guy a total dik? , why aren't teds MANDATORY in the "whole of QLD" ??

jmo , once the prawns are possibly 'decimated' ,why would the fish 'bother' to turn-up .... ???

Hey Gazza, yeah what a load of Cr*p.

Lets have a competition to see who can find the most examples of mis-information, political propaganda, outright lies and false/lack of science in just this one media release.

How about this one: “The removal of the seasonal closure will see equal access to the resource for both recreational and commercial fishers.''
So from this we can all assume that rec fishers will now be allowed to drag trawl nets in these areas with 5+ metre steel beams dragging below them all over the bottom and be able to keep all the prawns they catch?

This is just another bad example of the Minister being responsible for various primary industries and a secondary industry in recreational fishing which is in direct competition with the commercial sector

Could not agree more Horse. I genuinely believe that McVeigh has a good working knowledge of land based primary industries and is probably the best person for that part of the Minister's role.
But Fisheries is a totally different kettle of fish. Pardon the pun. Couldn't resist. ;-)
Commercial fishing is an extractive industry of a community owned resource in an environment that we really know very little about (compared to land based), with no fences, no sense of ownership, no sense of stewardship, and a host of outside and competing interests with a first in first served attitude.

McVeigh gives the impression of someone who is stuck with the annoying little extra portfolio and leaves it to the so-called experts in Fisheries Qld to tell him what to do. Same as has happened for the last 20 years.
Unless the govt put in a sub-portfolio or junior minister for fisheries it just continues to show the LNP contempt for fishing in general and rec fishing in particular.

The experts at FQ would be aware that high rainfall and floods trigger high commercial yields. These guys have managed to have their cake and with at least 2 years to eat it too.

    Extraordinary and frightening decision!

Mark Robinson MP assured all and sundry Rec fisho's in the Sunshine State would be better off.

    What's going on?
Normally about now we'd see a post reminding us about that wonderful 9 million dollar pro licence buy-back (but strangely without any actual reduction in total catch ) designed to make rec-fishers feel warm and fuzzy.

I tried to tell you , but you never listened.. Libs are no different to labour....all talk crap and all for themselves.

Never trust any of them unless its written down on paper and signed in triplicate and all fine print with no escape clauses.

    Another great load of B***SH**!!

Does anyone here believe that the govt or Fisheries Qld will, in 2 years, consider taking back that access permit? And who is going to do the "Condition of the river"assessment?

It would be laughable if it was not so pathetic.

    MikeD , (&others) Maybe if we could ALL chuck-in a $1 ,

Timiboy could get elected & depose the sitting member ,
and then do some good...as an enthusiastic underling FishMinister

p.s. I'll back him in for $5.00 , maybe $20.00 , but would need tax receipt

    Re: Lnp increases beam trawling!

So how do you measure this sort of trial ?
If it is successful - It stays right ?

This is just another example of crap we rec fishoes can expect from a minister who has commercial interests in his sights first & foremost

    Chris
Give a man a fish & he will eat for a day !
    Teach him how to fish
& he will sit in a boat - & drink beer all day!
