Thread: Waders a good idea?

    Waders a good idea?

Thinking about getting a pair of waders for some winter beach fishing. What does everyone think are they worth the hassle?

If so what brand do you own or recommend?

    Cheers

Trust me they are definitely worth the hassle. If you end up getting them wear a pair of socks and trakky daks under them and you will be nice and warm and DRY!

Sorry I forgot to add that I have had a pair of Hornes Tuff waders for over 10 years and can't recommend them highly enough.

Yep used them all the time when beach fishin but just remember dont walk out to far and keep an eye on the sets as ive been knocked over while wearing them and when they fill up its not good.
Probable the most embarrassing moment ive had with a rod in my hand, well there was that time at band camp...............

I'm happy with mine. I bought a pair of Mojiko waders on sale at Anaconda. I wear a pair of thermal pants and footy socks under mine and they certainly keep out the cold and keep you dry. Mine only get used a few times a year in winter but I have friends who beach fish more often than me who recommend the Horne brand which are very durable (and at least twice the price). As a safety precaution, make sure you buy waders with quick release buckles on the shoulder straps so that you can get out of them if you are bowled over by a wave.

They're one of those things you buy and then wonder how you ever did without them, just remember to wear socks with them or you can end up with some pretty red raw ankles.

I used to swear by the heavy duty Hornes but they got so expensive. I last bouight a $50 pair of cheapies and so far I have got 4 years out of them and they weigh 1/2 what the Hornes did

I love my pair of Horne Tuff waders, they must be 20 yeas old now and still going strong. I only use them twice a year now but I recon other brands would have rotted away by now. How much do they cost these days?

I should add that if you enjoy fishing in the middle of winter with wet nuts and sand in your crutch you'll find waders a total waste of money.

Go the Horne. Always tie a belt around the upper waist to stop water ingress. If you fall over and they fill up with water there's a fair chance you may not be able to stand up. Some people wear a light spray jacket over the top.

If you wear waders they reckon you should carry a knife to cut yr self out of them if needed.

I would rather some wet suit pants myself, not in a hurry to buy waders...

The Yanks have it all over us in wader choice. My next ones will be bought from OS. Check out the choice on Cabelas or the like

If by chance you are going to use your waders in a muddy environment select a pair without the traditional gum boot style boot, look for a pair with a rounded edge to the soles of the boots. Square edged boots suck like hell in the mud where the rounded edge types simply pull out easily, vastly different to use and wear. Hornes Dimple Sole waders are excellent, my first pair are still leak free after 20+ yrs of hard service. Recently bought a new pair with the next size up boot for $120 delivered from an Ebay guy in Melbourne.

I have had a pair made from this crowd in Tassie for over 15 years-used for trout fishing down south- very comfortable/ high quality - and long appreciated after the price forgotten.
