Been given a light baitcaster by the old man, something he'd bought for cheap years ago for freshwater and salt but never used.
Thought id mainly use it as a light EGI/Squid type rig which i do to get live squid for dewies/kings etc. Possibly even river fishing for for smaller fish if i get out in my mates kayak. But i may even use it for other stuff later on i don't know.
Its a Berkely FF15 5'6 medium rod and a Hawk? reel which seems to be pretty cheap. Ive greased everything up but it still isn't very smooth or nice to use. Looks like its headed for the bin.
So i might get a new small reel to suit.
Not after anything super expensive (god i love the look of those Calcutta reels) but if i can get something simple and reasonable price would be great.
What i do need to know as I've never really used baitcasters is what size reel and what weight line etc should i be looking at? It does say 10-20 on the rod, I've got some 15lb braid there leftover from my snapper setup, and some decent 8kg mono.
Ive got some a 8lb or 20lb Nitlon leaders there as well.
So I'm thinking just maybe use the braid with the 8lb leader?
Im just wondering if this line/rod is a touch heavy? My squid jigs range from 2.0-3.0 in size. So not the biggest or heaviest out there..
