Thread: Whats your offshore boat fuel consumption ?

Re: Whats your offshore boat fuel consumption ?

    Hi Brendon

i have trident several Solas 3 blade and 1 4 blade prop as well as a couple of mercury props over the past 5 years. In the end I went back to the Suzuki as none of the others performed as well as the standard prop with half a cup. None had the diameter of the Suzuki and all suffered the same problem of not lifting the stern of the boat out of the water. The best way to explain how the 4 blade performed was like a rubber band, when you pushed into a swell the speed slowed and when you came out the other side you speed would increase. Did 1 260 km trip out from Di with it, unbolted and returned.

have tabs fitted to the boat and have the motor as high as high as possible. The above figures quoted are off the full flow meter and must be close as the litres used are very accurate of the bowser (several times I have put 250 to 300 litres in and have been within a litre or 2).

regularly run from Raby bay down to the good coast and will get 1.5 to 1.6 l/ nm based upon fuel used with 18 1/2" pitch. If if fit the 21" will get 1.4 to 1.5

Seafarer Victory 6.0 with a 225hp Honda. Always get 2km/L in most offshore conditions. 40% better fuel economy then the previous evinrude 175 DI.

They are great numbers for that boat/motor setup. Is that a new 225 honda?
Previously had a 19c haines with a 200 optimax on the back ,guaranted 1.5 km/L offshore.

Updated Results, have had the motor lifted and tested a new prop, I also test with and against the tide to ensure the results were reasonable. Also tried a second Zuke prop.

2800 Kevlacat with twin 225 Hondas. Normal cruise around 3900-4000 rpm which gives my a cruise of around 23kts and a burn of 65l/hr. Faster it just goes through the roof!

Re: Whats your offshore boat fuel consumption ?

Honda, when I did my test I found the tide wasn't an influence but the wind certainly was, going against the wind gave me better top end speed but I can't remember whether it gave me better fuel performance. The day I did my test it was blowing about 15 -18 knots. The only reason I can work out is that going into the wind the boat lifted higher out of the water.

Honda, your test graphed shows some incremental improvements as in the first graph, the second is my graph when I did my test, it is for a 150 hp Yammy 4 stroke on an old Allison Vision 195. I was getting worse figures than shown here, the motor original had a 17" 4 blade prop and it was certainly good for offshore work and got on the plane quickly but WOT was around 4500 rpm so the motor was working hard. I tried 2 other props, both 3 blades at 15" and 16". While these are a significant improvement overall I would like to get my fuel consumption down lower and maybe need to test a few other props but I suspect that the pod might be what is part of the problem, maybe I just need a new boat

One thing is clear is that it is worth testing to try and get the best combination.

VS - yes newish Honda. 2011 model.

Once we got the right prop for the engine it all came together. I average 0.5L/km on the Garmin engine display. NEMA 2000.

Spaniard King (Garry) set it up for me.

    Dignity,

Raising the engine a hole has certainly given me slightly better performance, as many have said raise the engine, then change the prop may be the way to go. In the end I am staying with the 18.5 as it planes a lot faster than the 21. quite interesting figures though, they were not quite what I expected.

BTW the following is an F150 with a 17k prop on the same Haines hull, figures are from the Yam gauges.

Re: Whats your offshore boat fuel consumption ?

I think mine would improve if I could get the motor a little higher but it is already as high as it will go, the prop is still buried a little too deep for my liking, is this a problem with most podded boats.

    Fuel cons.pdf

I hope this works - it is a fuel chart for a 5.6 m Shark cat running twin 90 V4 Evinrudes 2 stroke 98 models and Garmin GPS with Fuel Sensors. Tanks are only 70L I think each. Basically too small to go long bluewater fishing without taking jerrycans along....

Once across Moreton bay (takes 50 minutes from Scarborough) - its nearly time to head back due assuming some reserve (ignoring the Jerrycans)....

Needs 250 to 300 L to be a worthwhile worry free boat to get to the fish outside and back again - or 4 strokes! But the motors I have are good and strong and reliable and start first time every time so not about to change.....

I can also paste as an image....Fuel cons.jpg
