Opinions on the Jeep Gande Cherokee Overland

    Hi All

I'm still in search of a good tow vehicle that will rival my Toyota Prado Grande TD ...... .being spoiled the alternates quite bluntly suck ! - well maybe not !
Now I cant afford a Prado Kakadu @ around $100K but I can a Jeep grande Cherokee Overland @ $78K ..... my absolute max.
There is no doubting the specifications ....... for the V6TD - 8.1lt / 100km , 0-100kmph in 8.2 sec ..... more bling than you can shake a stick at & comfort up the ying yang = 4x4s car of the year.
Now - Jeep / Chrysler have struggled over the years ....... quality has been an issue ...... but the GC.Overlander comes from a different stable - German design / Italian engine - and a vast improvment in build ........................... hence it is on my very short list ... as a day to day car & tow vehicle
What else could compare .......? I took a look at the Ford Territory Titanium TD ..... nice , ticks plenty of box;s , cheaper ......... but a little on the small size

Any other thoughts ...... utes maybe - maybe not

Mate don't have any opinion on the Jeep, German design, Italian engine... Where are they made/assembled?

Throwing ideas out there, have you looked at the Toyota FJ Cruiser? Most of the running gear is off the Prado, but I think they only do the V6 4.0lt petrol at 11.4lt/100km.....

I believe the yanks have gone crazy on them...

Not really into the retro thing - plus there is no diesel - a bit agricultural too .......... pretty ordinary when doing 2000km trips every couple of months and that is also the problem with a lot of the crew cab utes

    G'day

Mate of mine just picked up the FJ cruiser. I took it for a drive and it's smooth as silk. May be worth a serious look, new they're 48k. (and yes, it's the prado petrol engine with auto box only atm.)

Just thought to throw the FJ into the mix, your mentioned utes in your original post and knowing you own a Prado thought it could be an option. In a years time I'll be in the same situation, I'm in VX Prado ATM but probably won't pay the dollars for a new one when the time comes. The FJ for me maybe an option, something in between a Prado and a ute.... Wait and see I guess. Have heard other punters say the FJ drives real well and if they're 25k less than a Prado I'll have to give one test run.

    Thanks Dave

Having no diesel really goes against the FJ ........ specially when I drive for a living (day to day .... city) & knowing what the petrol Prado was like ( mates have em) they do know how to guzzle gas.

The FJ has been sold in the US of A for several years. It's an old design, and is archaic in comparison to either the current Prado OR the Jeep Grand Cherokee.

Me personally, I'd buy a Grand Cheokee in a heartbeat. The value is second to none. By all accounts the new diesel is outstanding, but I would wait for the upcoming 8 speed auto update.
Neither the Prado or JGC is for serious off-road work, but both hold there own in typical situations you'd take such a vehicle.
The Jeep is a better tow vehicle and is rated to 3.5 tonne and has electicity stuff like "trailer sway control" which fight to stop dangerous swaying without you knowing it.

    Hi Mick

The problem for you and I (prado fans) is that the Japanese Yen is still strong against the $A ......... hence why Toyotas seem to cost a world - When I bought mine the Grande cost me just over $70K new while now a Kakadu with the extras added will be nearly $100K on the road.
This is where the Grande Cherokee (top spec) is such a bargain (Strong - $A vs weak $US) ......... you are getting a $100K car for $75K - Having driven one a few times now & seeing what it offers has me suitably impressed - the appointments rival the best out of Europe ...... but it has better off road cred.
