Re: Has anyone looked at Mounting AND waterproof case working together for Tablet Nav

I have the IPAD 2 with the German made waterproof case, It cost me 350 from the Supplier in Oz but i can tell you its well worth it, The protection it offers is fantastic,

So far i have had used it as purely the GPS in the boat and what a greta thing it is, the latest update from Navionics made it even better.
Will happily not put a new GPS in the boat now, Slowly transferring all my marks over now.

Thats sweet Lee. They dont make the German case for the Iconia. Apple definately have a greater range of after market goodies for their products at present, but the Android market is catching up and the Iconia is one of the best sellers, so for now I will use a generic bag for mine when cradled and later upgrade if I can.

I have a Humminbird 898 with Side & Downscan , it has a 7" screen & I have been thinkin about connecting it to a tablet of some sort as a second larger monitor.

I was thinking along the same lines to use my lpatop witha conector cable, but it is too big, .

You do you guys actually mount the tablet/Ipad etc is it mounted to a cradle of some sort ??? I only have a side console but its only used in freshwater, so there isnt much protection...

I havent gotten a mount for mine yet as i can use it by propping it up on the dash if needed, My plan is to get a mount in the very near future so its more portable, as i fish from a lot boats it makes it easy to BYO my Gps so it has my marks in it.

See ram mount's site in the us. Select tablets down left hand side and input your tablet and it will show the options. Can do same with laptop but very hard to keep spray out. Cheers

Deckie, An ipad cant make phone calls, It does however receive emails and that sort of thing, Yes they have speakers, the aerial is inbuilt, Navionics chart cost $45,
basically a laptop but a whole lot smaller and smarter oh and cheaper.

    Cheers

Well a Galaxy tab will do all that and can make and receive video calls and act as a wireless router for up to 4 computers, and Navionics latest android charts are $16. Plus u can get 7 inch and 10 inch flavours.
I Prefer 7 inches myself as its more portable.

Deckie the Ipad is Apple which = not really compatible with windows stuff plus the tablets are not really designed as pc's. In my experience they have primitive office type aps which will allow you to view documents but I doubt you will be doing full on spread sheet work.
They will also burn through a charge in short order with the screen on all the time so they will need a charger except for short trips.

In short they are a nice toy and handy with the right aps but they cant replace a laptop for real work

Fair enough FH. Thanx for that.
Was getting excited about maybe a generation or two from now that i could slip one of these under the arm on the way home, do a bit of late night work so i could take tomorrow off, then clip it to the dash in front of me whilst i drag some lures around..all the while making/receiving calls whilst listening to some led zeppelin patched thru the speakers. Then if the fish dont respond i can play frogger or watch a porno, with an alarm clock set for 3 hrs in case i drop off. Dammit it cant be far off.
Yeah i also forgot about the apple/windows thing for a sec as well. Looks like still need the inverter/usb, laptop, plus tv, plus mobile, plus gameboy, plus ipod, 3 aerials, plus plus.

You can do all that with the right tablet just not serious office type stuff allthough there are office apps around so I may be wrong. You will definitely need a charger though .
My Galaxy will run Navionics make and receive normal or video calls, chat on Skype, send or recieve emails. Take pics or videos and upload to Facebook or Youtube etc or email all while playing music and or watching movies of any kind.

I have a 300w inverter in my cabin and I also have 12v sockets in a few spots around the boat and a cigar lighter usb power supply so I can charge assorted stuff where ever needed.

I do use my Ipad for Xcel and Word docs, The app is called IDOCS, It works really well, I actually prefer it over the windows version, and yes when its quiet catch up on some work.
Just make sure you have the option to charge it, A cig lighter based charger is all i use.

    Cheers Lee
