Thread: Berkley Nanofil - cures the pain of wind knots ( for me)

I also agree. We fish a little differently so use 12 lb but apply the same logic. No need to set yourself up with another risk of tackle failure if you don't have to. If capacity is not an issue go heavier and fish the line as if it was lighter than what it is so you remove the risk of a mainline breakage. It's why a lot of Barra fishos use 30 lb braid on baitcasters but in reality fish them as a 20 lb set up. It also means the fancy knots that take time like the Bimini twist and leader knot don't fail but the knot at the terminal end does first. This is great as you lose less tackle and also less time to get back on the water.

I did a lot of light line fishing over the years - most of my ANSA sportsfishing masters fish came on 1kg mono ......... anyhow I just feel that a superline like 3kg Nanofil is thin enough ( probably thinner than 1 kg mono) ......... Even the specialists / tournament guys drop braid in favor of straight fluorocarbon / hybrids if fishing pressured fish in gin clear water.
To me it just seems like you are putting too much pressure on your fishing system going down when in most cases you don't need to - specially when a line like nanofil is so thin anyhow.

Well, I like the idea of getting the maximum of my "fishing system", so if I fish 1-3Kg for breaming, I use a different style than when I fish 3-4Kg for flatties.

I suspect that nanofil has a similar breaking strength to fireline, so 6lbs really means 10 lbs and I don't really need 10lbs class on my 1-3Kg rod. Basically for me the rod dictates the line's max strength.

Also I've been really happy in the past with 6lbs mono (platypus) and then 3lbs crystal and microfuse, so I tried to continue in the 3lbs (i.e 6lbs breaking) class with nanofil. In hindsight, I should have gone 4lbs for nano.

Honestly - I think that is a misnomer ........ I actually think that nanofil breaks reasonably close to the stated breaking strain ( not pretest close - but certainly not fireline close - WIDE)

i agree about the rod - but am more than happy to fish a rod that is under it's class ....... I like to max out a rod rather than one that is underfished s o I know what you are saying!

Having a line break at 3lb Vs one that breaks at 6lb ....... makes SFA difference to me unless it costs me bites ........... and that is where the leader comes into it !

I spooled up some of Paulus's Tasline on the weekend just gone. Now this line will prove interesting.
An actual fine braid with exceptionally good knot holding ability.

It is slightly stiff similar to how nanofil feels but a lot finer diameter and not slippery to knot with and does not seem to fray/deform with knotting.

    Very well priced as well.

Now if this crap weather will piss off I will give it a run this weekend.
    Jack.

Ive got the 4lb nanofil line on my reel at the moment and I haven't had any issues with it. Mind you i haven't been fishing for long. I've caught quite a few big bass (40-50cm) on it and it worked a treat. The only bad thing i have found is that its hard to see the line the line once you have cast it out. Especially when its very sunny.

Anybody tried the Shimano Super 8 Slick line? Comes in 4 colours and is meant to be silent and smooth. I got some on the way from the US...meant to be very good.
My goal for 2015 is to accomplish the goals of 2014 which I should have done in 2013 because I made a promise in 2012 which I planned on keeping back in 2011.

Re: Berkley Nanofil - cures the pain of wind knots ( for me)

    Follow up........

I now love the 3lb nano, although have given up trying to tie it to term tackle.

I settled on a long leader (6m x 6lb mono), joined with uni knot (12 turn nano, 6 turn mono). When casting. the mono handles the impact and Lure/bait is well on its way before the uniknot leaves the reel.

With the extra long leader, I fish no different than I did before.

What impresses me most is the way it lays on the water, casts etc... the slightest breeze pulls a wrap from the rod tip......hard to descibe but totallly tangle free. reminds me of a fly line, when you cast and watch the line settle.

I can see why the original poster liked its resistance to wind knots, although wind knots had not been been a problem for me.

So far ive used it with 1 gm/4cm gulps, small minnow lures (47cm mullet landed), un weighted bait fishing for bream (many landed), float fishing for bream etc.

I have had the occasional uniknot failure, one was a very large and fast strike with drag too tight, went off like a gunshot, I thought the rod had broke......( i think another big mullet).

If using this line I strongly recomend a very long leader, having a couple of metres of mono wound onto the reel when trying to get a fish that last metre or two to the net is a good thing. not sure of ansa rules on this, im fishing for dinner, not records.......

PS; a large mullet on 3lb is some thing one must experience, hard to describe except wow. those things dont like getting hooked, I now think of them as the marlin of the estuary...

Re: Berkley Nanofil - cures the pain of wind knots ( for me)

Since moving to 6lb Nanofil I cant see me changing until something "provenly new and improved" comes along. It casts brilliantly and as NAGG's OP states it truly cures the pain of wind knots. (If you haven't experienced wind knots try some Power Pro 10lb into a wind or against the current :[

I use 6lb Nano and find the best combo is a 9lb leader. I use the doulbe uni knot. Now the Nano can be a pain to connect the leader to but if you can take the time to work it out it is well worth the effort. I take the Nanofil and doulbel it over, twist it between my thumb and index finger to get a nice tight twist (so the doubled and twisted Nano looks like a single piece of line. Hope I explained this well enuff )

My 2c given my experience with it.

Re: Berkley Nanofil - cures the pain of wind knots ( for me)

I'm still convinced that this is the best light superline for use on spin tackle ....... to qualify this I recently respooled my problematic stella with 4lb Fireline Exceed ( going away from the 4lb nanofil) - during my recent NQ road trip . Well instantly there was a problem with a wind knot on the second cast & after a days fishing I had removed or cut enough line to make the reel unfishable.
During another leg of the trip where lighter line was required .... I respooled the Stella with 8lb Nitlon (I regard Nitlon highly) .... well not on the Stella where there were several windknots generated .
I will state that the Stella has been notorious for being problematic with lighter lines ......many have failed with only the Nanofil coming even close to eliminating the issue - Of the 4 1500/2000 size reels that I use for lighter fishing ... 3 are spooled with Nanofil .
It's certainly not the best line I've used .... nowhere near it - but it is the only one in lighter classes that gives me any confidence to lay into a cast in any conditions ......
Near enough to a year down the track - I'm still a fan!

    Hi Spakx,

Yeah I loved the 3lb nanofil too... until about the 4th cast when I got the first wind-knot of many on an outfit that didn't have that problem before! Then when I got two unexplainable breakages miles from the knot, it was time for the bin.

I then replaced the 3lb nano with 6lbs nano and didn't get (nearly) any wind-knots after that, but I didn't like it with small plastics, so I went 4lbs micro-fuse and I'm quite happy with the suppleness and distance but I do get the (very) occasional wind-knot. Out of the three brands that I tried on that same outfit (3lbs nanofil, 4lbs microfuse, 3lbs fireline crystal) , the crystal has been the best performer by far. Others have the opposite view, so I guess it's horses for courses!

PS: I'll see your mullet, and raise you a large jumping pike any day of the week!

Well Tim, I now have 2 x 1000 size reels with 6lb Tasline and simply loving it.
Also just received 1000m of 12lb Tasline which i will spread over 3 reels before the weekend.
Also have one reel loaded with 15lb and it is awesome as well.
And set up some 35lb on a baitcaster for heavier deeper plastics and vibes.

I simply love how fast the knots lock up and how thin this line is meaning lots less water drag and more sensitivity.

You will have to love a truly limp braid though, it does not have any wire like attributes at all.

I am having no problems with wind knots, but have had a guide catch the leader knot once or twice, I don't think that is the braids cause though.
    Jack.
