Re: Are we being ripped off with tackle in australia

Then of course we have the situation where the distribution of most of the overseas fishing brands are concentrated into a small number of distributers that owe loyalty to one of the major brands.

Re: Are we being ripped off with tackle in australia

It't just occured to me that many will not be seeing past the price issue...and yes the price of fishing tackle is being activly manipulated.....nothing unusual there.

But we have to recognise that the fishing market is one of the most contrived, manipulated and market managed markets there is.

Every phase of the fishing markitung process is being engineered.

because the vast majority of fishing purchasers are not fully infomed this makes things easier.

The fishing market is driven by opinion, and mostly that is opinion provided by the manufacturing parent companies.

In this day an age it is near imposible to find any part of the fishing media that is not linked into endorsements or product placement, there is very little independent comment or opinion.

and it works out from there.......and if you look with open eyes I do not think there is a single sales, marketing or pricing ploy ( including the dirty tricks) that is not used.

Again planned a driven by the parent companies.

And chief among them is pricing to what the market will stand and not bassed what the product costs to supply.

Don't expect anything to be fair or equatable.

It all comes down to us as a market sector being a bunch of poorly informed and compulsive suckers.

Those of us posting to this thread ( and being reasonabley well informed) are probably a miniscule minority.

So the best we can hope for is resolve to treat the tackle industry with suspicion & distain and buy wherever we can get a better deal...if that works out to be overseas, so bee it.

The vast majority of the profits will be going overseas no matter what you do.

As for the local tackle shop...well that will just have to survive on service and bait.

    cheers

    Food for thought:

Plasma televisions were around $8000 a few years ago, now you can pick them up for a fraction of the price because of all the economies of scale and other costs recouped.

High end Japanese reels have had the same price for years, why? Surely they have recovered all their costs and r & d etc. Suspicious.

oldboot may be onto something I think, we see (say) ET fishing with a Shimano XXX, next show, River to Reef has the same reel/rod/whatever, so the greater audience immediately says "gees, they must be good" and so the distributer ,who just happened to import a gazillion of these reels, and has just handed out a swag of them for free to every writer and TV host they could find, and as such, can almost charge what they like for the brand/item.

I guess after a couple of minutes "mulling" I cannot honestly remember buying anything based on what I saw on a TV show, we are talking outboards and fishing tackle and so on here OK! never once have I seen a boofhead host using a super see through thermo plastic high speed "thing" and went out and bought one, maybe that is just me, but then again, maybe as oldboot says, we are the miniscule minority.

Re: Are we being ripped off with tackle in australia

If ya get out and chat with the unwashed masses, especially land bassed.......the ignorance is mind blowing.

It is the normal thing for people to go into tackle shops and either ask specifically for something they have read about in a magazine or on a TV programe ( the better informed ones), or to front the counter with not the first idea about fish, fishing or tackle.

There are blokes out there who don't even know 1 good knot that works in mono.

How many times do we get, fish identification posts on this very board, for fish that are relativly common and in the little tide book.....And anbody comming on a board like this is at least partly informed and interested in educating themselves.

And this WILLING ignorance is not restricted to the poor......there are plenty of people out there with plenty of money to buy expensive gear....... but are fishing ludites.

Ya'd think that if a bloke was spending $600 pluss on an outfit, that they would at least learn to tie a bimini and an albright, But I garantee you every fishing shop worker will tell you about some bloke who brings his outfit in to have the leader retied before or after every trip.

This ignorance is two edged.....it keeps the tackle suppliers in business, but it keeps the prices high..........it gives the fish a fair chance, but it is these ludites that leave bait bags arround and take fish before they know what they are.

I don't claim to be any sort of fishing genius......but a conversation with some of these guys will leave you feeling pretty good about yourself.

And that is why we pay too much for fishing tackle.

    cheers

Re: Are we being ripped off with tackle in australia

There is no doubt that the general fishing public is being manipulated..... its right through the fishing media & goes way back to the magazines & then the likes of Mal Florence - Rex Hunt where it started to ramp up ....... & today we are bombarded.
The reality is that the vast majority of the fishing public are clueless - that's why tackle is sold in BigW & K Mart - its there to capture that market. Most of the gear sold is rubbish - but people will buy it if they see Rex's , ETs or Starlo's name on it.
Then we have productions like "The fishing DVD" or "IFish" where you start to see more specialised techniques & higher end gear ....... plenty of marketing coin is poured into this sector to maximise sales of this mid to high end gear ...... because its a harder sell to more experienced fishoes.
Take a look at how many higher profiled fishoes were bought into the ETEC fold ...... just to maximise exposure

    Chris
Give a man a fish & he will eat for a day !
    Teach him how to fish
& he will sit in a boat - & drink beer all day!

I fit that description in a lot of ways and probably why i am not interested in buying from OS..cos I have bugger all idea what I would be looking for. Should I buy the reel with the 2500 titanium bearings..or the new model with only 2 strontium bearings...I enjoy fishing but not all of us have the time or inclination to study up on these things.
I buy local ...but as I said before..I don't buy much..can fit all the tackle I own in one plano box..cannot see any reason for any more.

Re: Are we being ripped off with tackle in australia

    Been hunting down a replacement for my favourite rod (a Team Daiwa Advantage). Prices found so far;

An Adelaide tackle store, advertised online as 'now only' $99.95

Local tackle store, online price $199.00

Local BCF (price on shelf today) $219.00

That's a lot of wiggle room on prices!

Going in to the Local Store tomorrow so will hit them up for their guarantee to beat a genuine advertised price on any fishing rod or reel they have in stock, by 10%

hi jim this is my point, obviously the adelaide store are chasing the clients, make a small margin and shoft product . rather than loose it overseas.. this is the way business is these days and more and more people know how to shop and shop smart..learn to play the game or get kicked off the field. be interesting to hear how you go with the local store

Re: Are we being ripped off with tackle in australia

I have been in the tackle industry for 20 years so it’s safe to say I have seen a few funny things when it comes to pricing. Before the internet was in every home I tried to get an account with a rod building supply wholesaler in this country for years only to no avail, much to my frustration. There resoning was that I worked from home even though I did this full time but what pissed me was that I knew many people that did this part time were getting supplied. I was forced to purchase another brand which ultamitly came back to bit me, stupid on my side really. Even after moving in to a factory in an industrial estate they made it extremely difficult. When I did get an account they certainly didn’t look after me on price. I got the internet on and had a look at wholesalers in the States only to see I was getting ripped big time, but so to were those that had account long before me.

These clowns did eventually find out I was importing my own components just so I could keep earning a living. They rang me and threatened me with legal action and that I was parallel importing. I rang my friend that is a barrister and he laughed when I told him what was said. He told me parallel importing was chucked out of law in 1997 because it was a restriction of business. They rang me again and I told them that there threats of legal action due to parallel importing was chucked out in 1997 and that my Barrister also said that you would also have to sue all Australian companies for every rod that entered Australia with Said components on them. Told them to piss off you pack of f%^k wits.

This also happened to a few tackle shops that decided to go around Shimano Australia because they could get the reels at half or less from the States. Shimano where alerted by customs to the container of Shimano reels. Shimano offered the tackle shops $1 for the whole container of reels otherwise the whole shipment was going to be crushed. It comes down to trade mark infringement and because their trade mark was on the reels they are the right full owners. I have way more stories of underhanded crap in this industry I could write a book about it.

This doesn’t apply to reels or in fact anything else if it’s for personnel use.

Did shimano win on the dollar for the container or were they told where to go ?

Re: Are we being ripped off with tackle in australia

Hundreds of reels for $1 means a massive profit. I know some tackle stores still doing this but on a very small scale.
