    strong 10"+ rod

    Heyas.

Does anyone know of a decently priced 10"+ (preferably about 11/12") rod that can easily throw a decent star sinker (size 3 or 4) plus a live bait of herring/garfish? Not sure what all they all add up to but I currently have a Sensor Surf which is rated for 100g and it's way too flexy. I can't get a decent cast going with a star sinker and a live bait because its too "bendy" and am afraid to push it too far incase I snap the tip so I just loop it out there and it only goes about 30-40m. I want to be able to throw a lot of power behind it and not be afraid of anything breaking.
Long shot but anything under $200 would be great.

    Thanks.

Something built on an MT8144 (12' long) with 6" cut off the butt would do it......or a Kilwell Live Fibre Z400-10X (13') with 12" cut off the butt.
Heavy blanks though but very powerful, especially the Z400.
Will cost more than $200 all made up, unless you can find a second-hand one.
    Cheers.

the "MT" series will have a rod to suit, they make a 4,6 8 MT.... that being MT = multi taper, 4-6-8 being the number of wraps (layers of glass) and the 144 being 144" long (12') but I am sure there is a thousand rods that will suit your purpose, plenty of foo the shelf stuff too.

Are you guys talking about custom rods?
I've never really looked into custom rods, was looking for off-the-shelf rods.

Snyderglas do one on their MT8144 blank.
It is called the Front Striker 8144
It is 12'8" long and retails apparently for about $280.
You will pay more for a custom rod, but you will get exactly what you want from an experienced builder.
Another one would be the Magraphite Heavy, I think Gary Howard does a rod on this great blank but sorry I don't know it's name.
Come to think of it, Gary Howard has several great rods in his surf arsenal, however casting a fair total weight is, as you have discovered, a little bit specialised.
    Cheers.

    Hi there HTM,

As Nigel and Noel have said, have a look at some 6 and 8 wrap rods.

Wilson Rods here took over from another fibre glass rod manufacturer some time ago and make the rods that might suit you, especially if you're looking for something off the shelf.

The placement of the reel seat is important too, depending on what reel you're using, and I imagine you're using a spinning reel.

I've got a 6 wrap 12' (6144) 2 piece that handles just about everything in the surf or off the rocks. I've also had one made which is a 4 wrap 11' (4132) but it's used for light surf stuff and is too soft for what you are doing, so I'd say you need a 6 wrap at a minimum.

Be aware that if you up the ante a bit and go for an 8 wrap rod, then they get a bit heavy after a while.

So if you're after an off the shelf job, then have a look at the Wilson range. You should get some change from $200 as well.

    Good luck!!
