And they are light, easily lost to tidal run and indesciminately kill marine life.

Green seems to be a dirty word at the moment, how ever I proudly class myself as green (altho certainly not in the way the Greens polical party is) as I like many fishermen are happy to abide by rules that protect the very environment the utilise. The ones that dont or whinge over every common sense restriction are the ones that give rec fishing a bad name and make us a bigger target for Green fascists.

Re: dillies are they still legal

If dillies are a real problem then I have no problem with some sort of restriction. I think a regulation that said that you could not leave them unattended would have been a better first step or that they be hard fastened to a solid structure.

ie Taking the kids down to a pier for a sunday fish and dripping a few Dillies of the side should cause no harm at all.

Of course it was just easier to ban them.

Witch Hat dillies are illegal but normal dilly are fine to use in QLD
    VHF CHANNEL 21
CALL SIGN : JT OR SC552(social club member)

There is a fine line between fishing and just standing on the shore like an idiot

I wonder how much deeper the ocean would be without sponges

Up here we Use Hussar as baits for real RED FISHS (SHSIIFDER)

lift dillies are fine, because they are not entanglement dillies. crabs just walk on to eat, and if you pick up they are effectively in a pop up bucket. drop it back down again and they can walk away.

Hence my comment about the green FQ dills.

Knee jerk reaction to keep the greens on side.

Fisheries management in Qld is all about politics and not science.

I was a regular user of dillies/Witches hats (back in the day).
Unfortunately they do catch all sorts of non-target species and not just crabs.
Yes I caught Bream, Flathead, sharks, Catfish AND Turtles in them !!!
The Turtles survived but the potential for death was there.

Times are changing and the resource is shrinking, save it or loose it !!!

Re: dillies are they still legal

whitches hats dillies never bothered me, because they were never left

we would drop a string, and by the time 8 dillies were out, it was time to go around and check, and around and around - so yes, there was bu catch, but we always freed it.

bugger the argument of ghost dillies, they never get left long enough to be washed away or otherwise lost
