    Yeah - ok - I'll bite.

Remember when your veterinary mate dropped your Pflueger rod with your 450 SSM Penn overboard a couple of weeks ago and you had to spend time at home pulling apart the reel and oiling it to save its life?

Well, ya wouldn't have had to do that with an Alvey!

In fact, he could have buried it in the sand and trodden on it and all you would have had to do is rinse it off in the briny to get rid of the excess sand and Robert would be your parents' sibling.

Now, if you were a proper Queensland fisherman - and not one of the effeminate latter day sort whose other pastime is watching blokes cooking on TV, you would own several Alveys. So many in fact that you would qualify as being rich because you would not remember how many you have. I am such a rich person.

To be honest though, my favourite is one of the later variety with a lever drag. Sure, it is macho to do all of that palming the reel stuff in lieu of using a simple inbuilt mechanism with a drag washer but it is a bit like driving a car with a manual gear box. You can do it but it is hard to hold a beer whilst doing it. ('Tis the same with making love, I find. )

Most of my Alveys do have plastic reels, but like all real Queensland men - you know, the ones who don't regard watching blokes cooking dainty stuff on TV as fair dinkum entertainment, there will be the odd bakelite version amongst my collection. Had I been a bit richer earlier in life, I might also have had the pride of owning one hand turned from New Guinea cedar. I never had the dough to have that pleasure but in my teens, I did live next to one of the wood turners who made such reels at Alveys at St Lucia in Brissy. He used to bring home trailer loads of the off-cuts for my Mum to burn in her copper. Oh, what I could do with those offcuts now!

I also own several spinning reels with names like baitrunner and TSS-4 and even the odd two-speed overhead with names like Tyrnos. Those reels have their place, as does Viagra, but real men don't need any of them 'cos the best and longest lasting pleasures are the simple ones, done in the old fashioned way, with all the sensuality that comes from careful caressing, and tactile stimulation and all the subtlety of touch that comes with mastery of the Alvey reel. A reel for real men! Sensitive men! Tough men! Hard men!

God you can waffle on Charlie.

Are you sure you don't write those Mills and Boone lovey dovey novels??
Who else could get an Alvey fishing reel, a manual gearbox from a car, a beer, a viagra pill and some slap and tickle all in the same sentence??

I still have a 9'6 glass rod and wooden spool 6" Alvery I won back when I was 15.

My favorite outfits...Snyder 9' raiders with 6" Alveys.

and...I never said I caught fish..I just sit in the boat and clear the waterways of fish with suicidal tendencies.

    No... I would've left it there ..

Thanks for the waffle though Charlie, its been a long while since you've inflicted that on us and I miss it.

Who watches TV cooking... I think that was another of your reel men brigade, TOL. An Alvey fisherperson to his bootstraps. Has more reels that have never caught a fish than all of us put together, barring Finga ,Pinhead (now) and your eloquent and elegant self.

You see I buy reels to catch fish not to take me back to a predawn age of my youth where only reel men with Alveys strutted the earth like dinosaurs of another age. That time has gone and has given us this time. You don't paddle or sail out to your marks now. Technology has moved us on, inexorably, the same way we have moved it on.

    Cheers

haha..and go beach fishing with your latest and greatest wonder of technology..with its 2500 cadmium plated titanium enriched bearings and that oh so smooth drag ..drop it in the sand and see how long that marvel lasts. Drop an Alvey in the sand..just pick it up and dunk it in the salt water and not only have you cleaned the sand from it you have also done its annual service.

Not everything new and wonderful is the best.

All the bling does is catch more fishermen in the tackle shops.

I suppose you eat new aged tofu crap too instead of sinking your teeth into a good old pre-historic pork chop or a big juicy t-bone??

And I bet you also drink pink vodka cruiser drinks in girlie bottles instead of Green Ginger.

Oi...I just remebered. Your a bloody hypocrite Jarrah dude.
Have a bloody gander in your shed young fella and have a look at all the old crap like those old jack planes and tenon saws and chisels and look at the friggin' old mallet hanging there.
If the old stuff is so bad I'll come down and take it all to the tip for you.
Bloody hell I'm a good bloke clearing all your old crap up

When I go beach fishing if and when a mulloway takes the bait I want to have a chance of catching it. I never want to miss out on the fish of a lifetime because of inadequate preparation and gear. A big mulloway in the surf will demolish anything but the very best.

    I buy accordingly.

Just saw your post Finga....Those old tools I use every one of them. To me they are the best for the job in the same way my fishing gear is, perhaps..

Gee this is entertaining..Any chance of borrowing an alvey?

Hey JJ, I would raise the white flag now, if I were you.

Criticising Alveys in front of Queenslanders????!!!!! Ya gotta be jokin'!

That would be like saying that Aussie Rules is a better game than Rugby League.

You see, we Queenslanders are just not into all of that sissy stuff even though we tolerate them's wot is. After all, as Mr Seinfeld would say, "Not that there is anything wrong with it."

That's where an Alvey 650 C5 reigns supreme. There's no jew alive that's beaten one of them.
