Thread: Do I Need a New Computer?

  1. #1

Cool Do I Need a New Computer?

Hi all. My computer is taking , on average 25-30 seconds to move around the ausfish web site.
I mean 35 sec. to open,29sec to login,25sec to open a section,34sec. to open a topic etc. etc.
Other websites are fine, like mudhole,e,bay etc.
This has happened in the last 2 weeks, up till then fine.
I use bigpond cable access and it is pretty fast.
Don't want to whinge, but would like to know if others are getting slow access or do I need a new lap-top for Christmas
    Cheers John

    John,

There are some standard windows housekeeping tools you could try, if you don't already know about them. 1st one I would run is disk cleanup. Go to start, programs, accessories, system tools, disk cleanup. In that window check boxes such as recycle bin, temp internet files, error dump files.. If you have never done this, there is likely to be lots of unnecessary files your computer is holding onto, which slow things down.

Another tool is disk defragment which is also found in system tools. I have mine set to defrag the disk once in a while.

Also try downloading, and installing, SpyBot. It's a free program that'll help you rid your pc of any bits of spyware or other nasties that may be infecting your pc and slowing it down. Update your anti-virus program and do a full pc scan, as well

I also have Firefox installed and set as my default browser. I agree that it is much faster than Internet Explorer.

    Fairpractice,

I am also having the same problem. I find it so annoying that I rarely have enuff patience to wait around until a thread is displayed and go and look at other sites that respond quickly

People should be using Firefox or Chrome instead of Internet Explorer anyway... using IE just supports the Windoze monopoly

    1. go to www.speedtest.net and check your internet speed.
    2. install firefox
    3. read the firefox sticky in the Help forum.
    4. learn about the firefox addons (hint, hint). It seems to be the ausfish ads from other sites like google ananlytics that slow the page loading down. If you look in the bottom left of your firefox browser you can see that ausfish loads immediately, but we are waiting on some overseas website to supply an ad in flash or java, and thast what seems to slow the page loading down. I dont want to deprive ausfish of its income source, but they really should impose a 1-2 sec timeout on unresponsive ad sites. there are ways around all this if you are keen enough to learn firefox addons, but thats up to you.

HEAR HEAR LEE. I HAVE BOTH WORK AND HOME, BOTH PAINFULLY PAINFULLY SLOW.

Why cant the site run equally as fast on IE as it does on Firefox? Why should I have to install and run Firefox, just cause "its deemd to be better and runs faster"? Why cant the site be set to run just as fast on IE? Seems no one wants to do the hard work and fix for both browsers. Why the hell should I have to download Firefox?????????? Fix the site so it runs just as good on IE.

Tanty Over - and yes some of you are probably going to say if you dont like it and wont change to Firefox then "pi** Off" and go elsewhere. Well thats your opinion, and the above is my opinion. World would be bloody boring if we all had the same opinion on everything.

Re: Do I Need a New Computer?

As others have said and I really like reading these forums but it can be as annoying as hell. I'm on a mac using safari and I can tell you it has the same issues as IE on PC.

I've managed to make this site load better and work at a level where I don't get the sh!ts with it by doing the following:

    1. Get the latest version of Firefox.
    2. Install the Ad-Block pro plug-in
    3. Add the following URL's to your add-block black-list:

    http://www.google-analytics.com/*
    http://acvs.mediaonenetwork.net/*
    http://pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/ads?*
    http://www.ausfish.com.au/ws/icon.jpg
    http://www.moonmodule.com/cs/ccm_fl.js
    http://www.ausfish.com.au/adserver/*
    http://www.ausfish.com.au/chat/images/template/*
    http://ausfish.com.au/images/number1.jpg
    http://googleads.g.doubleclick.net/pagead/*
    http://www.ausfish.com.au/vforum/for...acemenu_dom.js
    http://www.ausfish.com.au/vforum/forum_files/menucb1.js
    http://www.ausfish.com.au/vforum/for...menu_loader.js

This will make the site work as it's supposed to until the mods can work out the performance issues.

    Cheers
