Samsonvale Lake

I recently went fishing from the bank at Samsonvale lake and caught many of these fish on live worms. Could anyone please tell me what it is called? What is the size/bag limit and whether it is a good edible fish. This one was in the region of 1.5kg. I caught a few between 700g - 1.5kg.

Get on the DPI website and check what to do with them.
They are a danger to Australian waters. You're 'sposed to destroy the fish and throw them in the bin.

G'day Drikus.
The fish you have there is an intoduced pest called Tilapia. There is no size or bag limit, in fact as they are a noxious pest it is actually illegal to throw them back, they must be killed and disposed of properly. Can't speak from experience but I have heard that they are pretty good on the plate so if that is what takes your fancy go for it.

I thought the name sounded Afrikaans. I grew up in Cape Town- caught many Tilapia in Zim and Bluegill also.

From the Fisheries web site
"
It is an offence to have noxious fish (such as carp and tilapia) in your possession, dead or alive (except dead Nile perch). You must therefore dispose of the fish as soon as practicable after killing. It is recommended that you do this by burying it a suitable distance from the waterway where it was caught or disposing of it in a rubbish bin."

The fines are huge if you are caught with one. Something like $10000.
