I know what you mean about the confusion.
The DPI pictures and descriptions aren't the most helpful either. I'm just curious as the ones I've seen caught off Ballina look to be the same as what you've caught, and if they are then I've been calling them the wrong thing.
I always thought the Hapuka were a little bit slimmer than the Bass Grouper, and have different anal fins.
The guys in WA on the fishwrecked forum get into the Bass Grouper, and those fish don't seem to have much of a convex tail at all. Yet the DPI picture for Hapuka shows a distinct forked tail.......Arrrrrgggh. Who bloody knows. At the end of the day they're good fish and its a top effort.
Cheers
Brett

Thats a bass groper for sure 100%. Caught a fair few and got hapuka. Bass are fatter than the hapuka. The hapuka are more pelagic looking than the bass. Bass are like a 44 gallon drum.
well done Brett
good going and nice fish
you can see even fish pop it eyes from surprise seeing you out there in brooker
Nice fish! One of these days, I'm going to have to try that too ....

Brett.
The reason I asked about the brain spike is that it stops the flesh from browning or yellowing in the flesh near the spine due to electrical conductivity still going on when captured before they die.
How do I know this someone may ask?
I used to work on dropliners specifically targetting blue eye trevalla and Hapouka from the Barco and Taupo SeaMounts, (about halfway between Port Stephens and Lord Howe Island).
The company I use to work for (Fortuna Fishing Ltd) had a Japanese specialist showing the guys what to do etc. Also improves quality of the fish. Every blue eye cod and some Hapuka was dispatched using this method then placed immediately in ice slurry for some time then layered in normal sea ice.
Just passing a bit of knowledge I have for you all
I'll post the Hapuka and Blue Eye trevalla (might be a bit old now) sometime in the next day or so . This will show you which one is which from a NSW waters perspective.
Be tuned to this post
Cheers, Peter
the small one is a bar cod. and the bigger one is a BG. worked on a drop line boat for a year catching these bad boys off morten .
Sorry Jake, but I disagree,
even a small bar cod (2kg) has a dirty white edge on the end of it's tail.
I have not caught Hapuka or BG, but plenty of Bar Cod.
I will try and find a pic of a fish about that size.
Blane11...are you in Ballina?
Muzz
still looking for my pics the skipper took. might be another day or two yet
Bondy,
How did you go with the photos - I'd like to compare your Hapuka.
I really don't know whether they're Hapuka or bass grouper now.
Brett
Hi Brett
Here's some pics of both of them .....Not a lot of difference between them
Hapuka first and Bass Groper second pic
Cheers Willo
i think there bg brett, seen them pulled up at jims, if u do a google search plenty of live pics come up
After looking at Willo's pics, and comparing your photos Brett,

Muzz

Craig ps let the comp begin Brett ,my manual versus your half electric reel
G'day Brett,
Still finding these, I have a few folders and over 600 DVD's so it's amongst them.
Oh by the way guys Google searches for Hapuka and Blue eye trevalla is not the same as being on the spot with the real McCoy and species identified by fisheries scientists. Or where they Chefs in disguise
Will load these when I find them, will try for end of week.
Cheers, Peter
