By the way, I was not saying a specialist over head is not good, I just think that in this particular case, a threadline will be a far better purchase for him.
Yep. I have to agree with Noelm there.
My outside bottom bashing outfit is an old Penn 209 with some mono (don't ask what) and some rod I cannot remember the details of but it came with the Penn when I brought it.
Cost me less then $180 from that shop that cannot, shall not and will not be mentioned.
It's pulled up a few knobby's no worries at all from Davey Jones' larder.
I intend on living for-ever....so far so good

same for me, my first choice to go in the boat is a very old Spinfisher spooled with cheap crappy 10KG mono with an equally as old Ironglass rod that I built many years ago, I have caught so many good fish on that setup, it is the most used rod in my rack, gets used for Snapper, casting to Tuna, Jigging for Kingfish, bottom donging for Flathead, almost anything you care to mention!
the 5600c4 is more than enough to handle the big fish.have one myself.but if you need the xtra meters of line go for a 6500 both preaty cheap 2nd hand..i picked up a ultracast 6500c yesterday for $107.00 deliverd from u.s. close to brand new condition great reels for casting.but i'm pretty one eyed when it comes to abu.i dont like the eggbeaters i only use them for float fishing or lite lure for bream.now is a good time to buy from u.s. or u.k. the aus dollar is very good at the moment.peter
Thank you to everyone that has commented, i see that i still have so much to learn! I have used a friends egg beater before (baitcaster 8500D) which was a really nice setup but i prefer the feel of o/head, will start looking for a "combo" special.
Thanks again
If love is blind, why is lingerie so popular???
My mates who chase the big snapper at Wyalla like the ABU 9000 series and prefer to buy them second hand on fleabay to get the ones that are made in Sweden not China. I've been chasing one myself but ended up adding to my Penn SS collection with another 850ss.
With those 30lb plus snappers that can come along you have to give yourself every chance. If one of those big hoon kingys took your bait you also need to have some hope of dragging it in.
Its always the fish of a lifetime that will test your gear to the max.
