So on your next outing she's out of warranty!! I hope you get a good run out of her now.
My Etec is 16 months old and with 299.2hrs the thing just died offshore. No alarms No safe mode No power Not happy.
The Coastguard saved the day with a tow to manly Cheers for that.
My concerns are this particular day I was in the middle of South Passage
prior to sunup and all I could see through the darkness was unsafe looking water so I quickly got out of there and waited inside for the first rays to hit the horizon before heading back out. I would have had fun with no power on the first attempt.
The computer required replacing which was done under warrenty so the motor is running like new again.
My confidence with my motor has been shattered
So on your next outing she's out of warranty!! I hope you get a good run out of her now.

What HP?
Sorry to hear that, not a good day mate.
Do you only get 300 hrs warrantty with an etec??
299.2 hours... the warranty timer ran out a bit early on your one
that sucks though, especially for a major failure like computer.. my confidence would be shaky too i guess you just gotta be careful with the weather and always radio in to coast guard that you're going out. it's not much fun when it happens to you, and maybe that's the only problem you'll have with the motor but once something has happened you're always on edge after that.
time for a backup motor maybe? at least you can putt home..
Consumers buy a lot more cars than outboards and when was the last time you heard of a computer failure on a top reliability brand like a Honda...and Honda must sell LOTS more cars than outboard manufacturers sell outboards (including Honda Marine) so you would expect to hear about a lot of car failures if they were happening. I am not happy about failure rates in modern electronically controlled outboards (its not salt, they are sealed, its not vibration cause they are as smooth as car engines and sometimes are car engines - well Honda are) and they should be heat resistant where they are mounted)...it is not acceptable to spend 15-25k on a motor and not to think it will be as reliable as a new car engine. I mean come on THESE THINGS ARE VERY EXPENSIVE!
And...when they break you cant just pull over and ring the RACQ.
So...what is the answer?

Almost everything mass produced will have a failure rate some greater than others, don't get me wrong i am not a fan of the white ones at all ( Merc die hard i am ).That said this why items are sold with a warranty so in the event something goes wrong in that period it is dealt with at no cost to the owner in the event the failure is not the owners fault.
I can understand an owner being annoyed at something going wrong and possibly lacking faith in the brand when shite happens but it comes with the territory of relying on something mechanical with so many components.
Boating always has its risks and they are not all weather related but also the equipment we use to get us there and back and unfortunately one of those is our motors regardless of age or hours.
Lets not forget that as much we like to think Ausfish represents the entire boating community worldwide the fact is it doesn't so whilst we may hear a lot about a particular engine brand and its failure rate the big picture ( and it pains to me to write this being a merc man ) the actual failure rate might not be that bad given worldwide sales figures.
Look at this way Jace, you experienced a problem and it was dealt with under warranty.Don't dwell on the bad points and let those thoughts headnick you and ruin your enjoyment for boating.Even the most diligent of owners will experience a problem on the water just as any brand of outboard manufacturer will with there products.

I think outboard computer failure rates may be due to heat. They seem reliable most of the time. But with everything mounted with about 2 inches of the block they must be more prone to heat affects than say in a car. In a car they can put the electronics anywhere under the bonnet(away from the exhaust/block)
Electronics do not like heat at all. They are very sensitive and it doesn't take much for them to overheat and cause issues. I do believe E-tecs run slightly hotter than normal outboards aswell? but Im not 100% certain on that one.I have read of a few e-tec ecu's failing so maybe there is a relation between the two.
though its not just e-tecs that have had this issue.
There's alot to be said about good ol carby 2 and 4 strokes in some instances
Flex,
Try Putting up a Thread for those that have had Computor failures??
Only one brand comes to mind which has had significant issues with ECU's

Hey Jabba
Does warranty cover the cost of the tow back to the ramp , the ice that didn't get used and the bait that went off??........... The whole it's covered by warranty so what's the issue thing has always annoyed me.
Ian
Alcohol doesn't agree with me, but i sure do enjoy the argument!!!
The motor did not miss a beat once and I was very happy with the performance before it gave up I just have to convince myself that it was a one off incident.
I did get a service at around 150hrs for added peace in my mind.
The motor was fitted new in December 2008 and as far as I knew I had 3 years of cover. 5 would be cool though.
Bring back Summer:cool:
