Lake Mulwala well and Truly Firing!

Keen Dubbo Murray Cod fishermen Michael Coad, Neil Duncan and Brett Kleppe ventured South last week to the banks of mighty Lake Mulwala, where they managed to catch 13 Murray Cod for their week’s fishing.
Located 215km north of Melbourne, Lake Mulwala is popular with anglers from across Australia, and draws cod fishers from across all states and territories. At a huge 4,450 ha and with over 43km of shoreline, many anglers simply don’t know where to start when they first cast their eye on the jaw dropping impressive inland sea of sunken logs, weed beds and dense cod harbouring structure.
Lake Mulwala was created by the building of the Yarrawonga Weir across the Murray River in 1939 and was built primarily for irrigation on NSW and Victoria sides of the border.
Lake Mulwala has a holding capacity of 117 500 mega-litres, which is held back by a huge embankment which is 271 meters long, seven meters high and eight meters wide at its base.

It is best decribed as a weir on the Murray River, that was first filled in 1939. Today it supplies two major irrigation channels, the Yarrawonga Main Channel on the Victorian side and the Mulwala Canal on the New South Wales side. Together these channels service over 800,000 ha of farmland. The lake is 1,992 km from the Murray mouth and has a huge and vital storage capacity primarily held for primary production.
Lake Mulwala has earned its reputation as Australia's most productive Murray Cod fishery by turning out huge dinosaur-like Murray Cod well over the metre mark year after year. Structure in the form of standing and fallen timber offers a multitude of ambush locations and breeding sites, enough so that the Murray Cod population here is self sustaining, a rarity for Murray Cod to do in any dam or lake situation.
Michael, Brett and Neil have fished Lake Mulwala several times before, and have managed to catch fish up to 112cm with an estimated weight of well over 50 lbs.
Trolling large timber and composite lures designed specifically for Murray Cod, 13 fish were caught over last week’s trip, with the best of them being a thumping 86cm. Plenty of fish over the 70cm mark were also caught, with large profile lures like the 120mm Australian Crafted, Big Mongs, and Kleppe’s Cod Catchers all receiving their fair share of bumps, scratches and bruises handed out by Mulwala’s resident Murray Cod.

Great report, I have fished there many times. I would recommend the everglades area before the waterskiers get up. It's great to here of the mighty green fish is still doing well, I'll be chasing them again next season opening.

What a great spot is Lake Mulwala, very picturesque, but look out for those prop busters, big green things live under them.

    Again gret report well done:cool:
