Budds Bait 'n Tackle Cleveland - another BCF??

With this outlet having changed hands yet again, the new owners have stripped the shop of stock and, take away the present wall upon wall of lures and Gulp Bait, there is very little stock left!!

I know that floor stock is dead money but even getting a small bag of brass swivels was not that easy! Likewise hooks, sinkers etc.

Early days but none of the staff can even spell worm or hook but hopefully this will improve as time goes on.

What they are good at are slamming on the prices!

Wow! Blood worms are serious money and for my $20.00 I got about seven!

I know worms retail at about $300 per kilo but having bought worms from them for many years, the value for money seems way down!

I queried their rod binding services at $15.00 per runner and with most rods having around eight runners, this meant $120 to get one redone. A new one at Big W would be about fifty bucks!

Fresh bait is now non existant other than some excellent small pillies and some mullet frames.

Maybe this is the way to go but for me it is just another BCF in the making. Inexperienced staff, prices all over the place, lack of every day stock and reel prices you don't even want to know about!

    Hi PP

Got a runner put on a rod a little while ago, also noticed everything that you mentioned.

Couple of more things, they have lost their rod builder ( see quit ), Mark Jones, who was excellent, they are sending the rods out now.

Staff are far from good, found one of them ( bloke ) rude to say the least, I will not go back there.

Will not stay in business for long if it stays the way it is, which is unfortunate, as I don't like the chain stores either.

It's had new owners for a while now and I agree with what everyone has said. I use to get some great help and prices once apon a time all of which I was all to happy to mention in my articles and talks. Since the change of ownership and all the new staff I have to say I'm extremely disapointed with the service and products offered. Hope they can change this around before they loose all there customers.

    Yep I'm off em too,

Last time I went there the boss and 2 employees are having an argument over wages and conditions at the top of their voice in the middle of the shop.

Right at the bait freezers where I wanted to get bait, had to wait 5 minutes before one of them realised that I was trying to buy something, least he was helpful.

Not good for busines, the middle of the shop is not a good place to deal with personel issues.

    HOnda.

I had a talk to Terry on saturday (older bloke who worked there occasionally) at the school fete.
Budd decided to sell and Daryl didnt want to take on the whole lot( read price) so that was that.

Im getting my bait and basics from the bloke down at Vicky Point near the ramp.
Hasnt got a wide range of tackle but the baits good and they like a chat.

I agree with you boys as well. Looked all good when the new owner took over but now I avoid the joint like the plague. Find the staff more interested in watching the TV than noticing you in the store. You don't mind paying a bit more when you get good service and can get everything you need from one place but theres not enough stock and the prices are too steep.

I only go to Fish Head and the Tackle Warehouse now always have what you need and you always have a staff member approach you and offer you advice.

    Thanks for the "heads-up", gentlemen.

Budds are a bit out of the way for me but they were good and cheap on rod repairs and so I would willingly make the trip there for such and the occasional reel service from time to time

Obviously, it is not worth the drive now.

Re: Budds Bait 'n Tackle Cleveland - another BCF??

Have previously read the posts on here about Budds and was surprised by some of the negative comments about the shop and the changes that have occured. When a new owner takes on a business inevitably changes occur and many people have difficulty with change but unfortunately things don't always stay the way they were forever. Just look at the fishing landscape we are in now compared with 5, 10, or 20 years ago, the changes are enormous but we have adapted and all still enjoy our fishing.
Well, the more positive news is I dropped into Budds this morning for some bait and bits and pieces and was surprised at how much they have increased the range of stock and improved and expanded the choices of so many items. There was plenty of bait too and the tackle top ups I needed were well catered for.
By the way the staff were friendly, knowledgeable, helpful and quite frankly I can't see what the fuss was back then. Perhaps part of the stresses of being new to that business operation.
Looking at the dates of previous posts perhaps things have sorted themselves out for the better in recent weeks with skills, stock and supply chains. Regardless the place still has that quirky character that thankfully makes it different to the BCF's of the world and a pleasure to shop at.
There have been several changes of ownership since the Budds originals kicked off, but outwardly in the past the level of change was minimal on the surface. The shop has now grown and moved on from that and the owners have my support for having the balls to change the way they see the business needs to head and to give it a good go. If unsuccessful then let them modify things, but le's not knock them for having a go.
Personally I have always enjoyed the skills of Mark Alderson the rod builder and respected his ability to do the quickie repairs and provide the advice I needed. To me it is a shame he has moved on and that work is no longer done on site, but he is still doing the rod building and bits and pieces, so in some ways not everything has changed and I'm told his turnaround times are good.
The beauty about living and working in the Redlands is there are now a number of good tackle shops in the region that service the growing needs of all fishers. They all provide good service and have their speciality areas. The bottom line is without them it would be a bit like supermarkets where only the big players rule the roost and the ability to meet specialist choices become limited.
I for one appreciate the good service provided by all the small specialist tackle shops in my region and we should all be supporting them for supplying our local needs.
Enough of the negatives and bring on more of the positives please.

    Cheers

Re: Budds Bait 'n Tackle Cleveland - another BCF??

I agree with Bill on supporting the small tackle shops, I left Mooloolaba this morning and picked up an overseas visitor in Brissy on the way and visited Jones's Tackle, Fish Head and The Tackle Warehouse as I support these and my local outlets. But the BCF comparison is complete crap, you can't really tell me the things every one spat the dummy about happens at a BCF store, I have never had a problem with a BCF 'Supermarket' and as far as I am concerned they do the same job as all other chain stores like Woolies, Wow, Kmart and the BCF Parent Company Supercheap, have a whinge for shore but not at somebody else's expense for no factual reason.
The Pink Panther, if you want wall to wall Lures and Gulp go to the above mentioned shops or even BCF

Give him a go if you had to go through what he went through with that shop and the way staff were paid you would have no hair left.
He's trying to get some custom rod builders to add to his stock instead of imported stock.
It will be interesting to see how Mark's going now as pc have stopped producing a lot of the blanks he uses.
To me it looks like Mark's devotee's are trying to sledge the shop over whats happened.
I might get off my bum and make some rods for him yet..

Re: Budds Bait 'n Tackle Cleveland - another BCF??

I am all for supporting the minor tackle shops like Jones's tackle am a frequent person in that shop, will buy more of the specialty things like leader and that but when it comes to plastics the Mart of A and Big Dub seem to be the goods. I love supporting the small guy but at a saving of around 4 bucks a bag of plastics I can't go past that its almost buy 2 get one free compared to the other places like BCF 10.99 a bag... sorry buddy I'll take my plastic shopping elsewhere... Its like finding a good mechanic, people need to realise there is more money in returning customers rather than raping their wallets at the door! I spend on average 60 - 80 bucks a fortnight on leaders and plastics jigs etc... I am all bout the savings, though Jones's tackle always do me good prices when they can.

Re: Budds Bait 'n Tackle Cleveland - another BCF??

60 - 80 on plastics a fortnight???? bloody hell. I'll stick with bait thanks. IMO the SP market is a rip off...the manufacturers must be making an absolute killing on them. I just go to 2 tackle stores..either Jones or the one at Carseldine..my time is limited so driving anywhere else does not save me any money at all.
I did go to BCF at Keperra once..never again.
Now if we all black ban a tackle store based on one or two bad experiences..then word of mouth will take over..lots more will not go there..and what do you have left..nothing but the major chains.

I'm new to this site and read this store was having a sale. http://www.ausfish.com.au/vforum/sho...ighlight=budds After reading these posts about them one should be wary .... Turns out there are new owners and the store is now owned by Mossops.
