If people concentrated on the really important things in life, there'd be a shortage of fishing rods.

I am not so sure about that. First I heard about this was on Nuggets show this morning (Sunday) and deadline for feedback is 5pm 10th of July.
Full info page is here http://www.dpi.qld.gov.au/cps/rde/dp...8_ENA_HTML.htm
The pdf file is typical government output. No clarity about what they are going to do, dressed up to look nice. It is the 'devil in the detail' that concerns me.
Could not access the feedback form on their website today, so I have no idea what they are proposing.

Taken from Page 9 of the Draft Document :

"Loss of Fish Habitat - These problems are being offset somewhat by improvements in planning for coastal and inland development and the introduction of marine protected areas, but habitat damage and loss is a major reason for depletion of fish populations."

Isn't this referring to coastal development and loss of mangrove areas? If so why did the same government department (under a different name) close off areas of the bay to fishing.

Is this their long term solution? Allow more costal development and loss of mangrove habitat and make up for it by closing off more of the Bay?

Reads like multi regurgitated sick to me, given up how many times I have read that same drivel (even written it), outside of the formatting it's a simple cut and past job from easily a thousand previous propaganda like documents over this last 10 years Australia wide, non governmental zealot organisations included..........designed solidly to appeal to sheeple sensibility.

With the grossly corrupt nature of QLD fishery's, who will be the fresh injection from lower management/scientific right through to the minister to make even a 10% change this time??, history shouts that the personal quality's needed to do the job with any public conscience is not possible under their known regimes of leadership ideology ATM.

    cheers fnq

PS Seriously love the word "somewhat" contained within a particular sentence, way to go towards keeping the conditioning for ALL future preservationist like assaults upon RESPONSIBLE fishery's management.

Just love the solution, this will fix everything...

Implementation of this strategy will involve some reorganisation within the department , and re-prioritising resources to achieve the goals outlined. More energy will be directed to building vibrant, robust partnerships with all key stakeholder groups and other government agencies, and improving internal links and work program alignment. An implementation plan will be developed for the strategy to progress implementation of the strategies outlined.

More wasted taxpayer dollars. its about time they are held accountable for the funding..

BTW, loved the big phallic symbol at the start of the document, bout what we are going to get..

    Regards

Changes in markets Australia is a major player in a few seafood markets (e.g. farmed tuna, rock lobster and abalone fishing), but our export trade is not significant in a global context. The Australian seafood export market may well increase as a result of Chinese and other Asian economic growth, but Queensland must act now to ensure both market share and the quality of our product in an increasingly sophisticated and demanding marketplace. China is consuming an ever-increasing share of the world’s seafood and the growing Chinese economy could alter the global seafood market. In Europe and the United States, non-government organisations have mounted successful campaigns to force retailers to source their seafood from companies and countries that can demonstrate the sustainability of their stocks.

This is all it is about IMO. More they lock out the recs and show "sustainable practice" it will help make more money for the big boys - exporters, coles woolies, and the Govt make more money with taxes/trade agreements.
They protect themselves financially as we get fisted.

I agree with some of the above comments.

Ecofishers will be making a submission in response to this document on behalf of it's members and Queenslands Recreational Anglers.

Anything you wish to add, please forward it to me asap.

This document essentially says "we are going to chuck out the old system"

and make it easier to realise the value of the fisheries, for the commercial sector.

These new principles will drive the transformation of fisheries management and development in Queensland over the 2009–14 period to ensure it is: • driven by knowledge • informed by relationships • delivering valued services through partnerships • founded on responsibility • sustained by investment.

Only lip service is paid to the recreational sector. Despite the fact that the Draft statement calls for

Maximising the potential for community benefit within the principles of ecologically sustainable development: this will be achieved by fostering investment in fishing and related industries, enhancing the community value of recreational fishing and improving the profitability of commercial fishing and aquaculture.

Any comparitive model you care to apply shows the recreational fishing sector returns the highest value per KG . Yet this draft barely discusses this factor.
Rather it focuses on,export, market position, point of difference, informed partnerships.
In short it is a " GET OUT OF JAIL FREE" card for Fisheries, and the Government.

Read it carefully and understand the subtext, if this gets up we will get screwed yet again.
We need to take that gun to this knife-fight and point out to the government that in order for it to meet its own objectives for the States fisheries, it needs to put a financially proportionate effort behind the sector that creates the highest sustainable return . And that is not the commercial fishing sector.

The ECOFishers submission has heavily highlighted the lack of detail on the rec sector
