Unusual Australian made reel from the seventies or eighties.

    Hi,

I am trying to identify an Australian made reel that was sold in the seventies and eighties from memory.

The reel was basically a side cast reel but it was different in that a mechanism was used to rewind the line onto the large spool in a type of basket weave fashion.

It was said to eliminate line twist problems as the line was put back on the spool in the same manner that it came off.

It was not a big seller but I remember seeing it advertised in fishing magazines.

Because of it's large size it was regarded as a fishing reel to be used from the beach or rocks.

Now that I am retired I would like to acquire one and find out more about them.

Sounds like a Sea Martin made in SA or WA, top cross patern when line on spool

They were making those at port adelaide by neptune tackle.and only a few years ago they stopped making them.
The original wooden cedar ones are selling for $1000 plus but the one you want still can be found on E_bay or you'll need to google tackle stores and email them in trying to find one.
I had one. they have a lot of things going for them but they are large and heavy, you'll never break or wear one out.
Try some newzealand tackle stores.try and find the mark11 model.
Should be able to pick one up for $100

Agree, Sea Martin we also used to sell a few of them for the boys who did not want an alvey but something with minimal moving parts for mainly beach use.

Still has the same suposed line twist problems that an alvey has...still spools off twisted and winds on straight.

they certaily pop up from time to time on ebay..... bud's at cleveland had one second hand a while ago.

    cheers

Definitely a Se#####in.....Solid as a brick dunny.....but no technological masterpiece. Same probs as the Alvey with those wanting to be lazy about their fishing. Horses for courses guys.......Less moving parts than an alvey (hard to believe) but a smaller spool diameter, so stiff mono lines still gave memory probs. and finding that hook to recieve line in the dark was a major issue. think i still have one buried in the storage unit!
