Thread: Going Sharking

    Going Sharking

Hi all well I have been thinking of local places where I could catch a few sharks and found one. Hawthorne, near the City Cats. I am wondering if anyone has ever fished there or near there? I'll be giving it a go Monday night. I'll be using large mullet for bait with some burley, hope all goes well.
Attached is a picture of the location. The black box is where I will be fishing, the red line and box is where I will be ballooning the mullet, and the gold line is where I'll be flicking plastics. Think I'll get a few fish?

    Hi

I have checked it out a few times but never fished that exact spot.

If I had a boat in winter i would fish all the structure on that side of the river up for about 1 km, very interesting, jew and thready yeah good chance, even a cod.
nice structure for bream and flatheads.

wish this rain would bloody stop and so the river wasn't so muddy

also I have read they get a few jew round there in winter because there is a drop off, but have not tried it myself.

    cheers

Tailorboy, I reckon If you ballooned around the mouth of Norman creek there on the out going tide you'd be set. And if you want good bait I go to the mouth of breakfast creek with a castnet. Don't be afrain to use the bream either, boney bream are great but they arn't tough enough.

Hope you get one (or a few), I'll hit the sharks soon aswell.

    Cheers.

    Re: Going Sharking

you might have a bit of trouble getting your float out with the current it will pull it to the bank if you dont have a really strong wind from behind you . maybe find a spot like mentioned before with a creek so your float will go out further with the water comin out of the creek . i went out with icenight yesterday but didnt get any but a few of his mates did , they got a few 4-5 footers and lost a 9 footer , he kept 1 for the oldies in his street and i got the head and spent 3 hours trying to cut all the meat of the jaws last night when i got home .

    cheers nico

    Re: Going Sharking

see that pontoon on the top of your pic infront of the vacant block.....thats my brother and sister inlaws house......we have been dumping shitloads of prawn heads ,oyster shells and all sorts of seafood scrap under the pontoon in the last few weeks so i recon something would be there! (there is a house there now, not a vacant block like in your shot and a cat on the pontoon called drink n dive) we caught a bream off it at 5 past newyear so i think it was the first fish caught for the year!

hey nico, have you tried leaving the head down the back of your yard for the ants to eat the meat off the jaws? saves spending 3 hours doing it and they'll love the feed...then spray for them! the only thing at this time of year is the heat gets it smelling a bit bad, thats what i did years ago, worked alright
    cheers. andrew
oh yeah, tailorboi anywhere in the pine or off the old hornibrook or shorny jetty goes alright for sharks, just fish any of the creeks or rivers around here and you should hook up mate

A guy I know fishes the Teneriffe side, near the ferry, pretty regularly and he gets onto the bullies. Can't imagine why Hawthorne wouldn't fish just a well, if not better.
