Thread: Snapper Hooks

    Snapper Hooks

At present we are using Mustard Big Red, Suicide 4/0 hooks for reef fishing.
We're bottom fishing for Snapper or Reef fish in about 140 feet.

But these Hooks don't seem to be sharp.

Could someone recommend a make and style of hook, please.

    Thanks

    Re: Snapper Hooks

Your choice of Mustad Demon finewire circles in 7/0 or 8/0, or Gamakatsu Octopus Circles in the same sizes. I prefer the Mustads mainly because they are not kirbed, and they are also a finer gauge.
Both are fantastic hooks with a great hook-up rate and both are well priced.
    Cheers.

    Re: Snapper Hooks

I'm with Nigel. 7/0 Gama circles for offshore, but I do also use the fine wire for shallow water bay fishing. Never tried them in the bigger size in deep, so cannot comment.

Thanks Niglr, Will get some of these and try them out.
Certainly not today. Blowing and Pouring at the Gold Coast, seas a bit rough.

Will let you know how we go.

    G'day Debro,

Yeah the Gamakatsu Octopus Circles are very hard to go past. Sharp, strong and relatively cheap. I match the hook size to the bait I am using, 3/0 or 4/0 for smaller pilchards and garfish, and 5/0 or 6/0 for larger baits such as silver whiting or large pillies.

Not wrong there mate....The mustards just arent sharp enough in my opinion.

By far the best hooks I have found are the 'Owner cutting points' in 6/0 and 7/0 octopus. The points are rediculously sharp and actually last for a good 3-4 trips.
They are a tad dearer to buy BUT they last so you get value.

I've found too that the Mustards aren't as sharp since they come out of S'pore.

    Re: Snapper Hooks

Tru turn 5/0 & 6/0 depending on bait and bait size are the hooks i use most of the time.

    Re: Snapper Hooks

Never used a tru-turn or an owner hook,

my boat only uses Mustad Big Guns, usually only in 3/0 & 4/0, (floaters get 6-8/0) although they do sometimes need a look at the stone.

In their favour, these hooks will rarely bend or let go,
to date, many good cod to about 15kg,
snaps, big blue eye, even a 27kg Sambo couldn't shake a well embedded 3/0.

    Just my opinion,

    Muzz
