    Backing for fly reels

I have a 1500yd spool of 30lb PowerPro braid and was wondering if I could use it as backing for my fly reels?

Would it do the same job as say dacron?

Whats your spool made from ?
GSP can crush some spools that aren't barstock aluminium

    Re: Backing for fly reels

    Hey flyfisho,

I have just recieved spare spools for my Tibor QC Riptide & Gulfstream. I was looking to load the spare spools and was wondering if PowerPro would do the same job as traditional backing?

    Cheers

certainly would but better as Dacron has a larger diameter . You will defiantly need that when chasing big nasties on your gulfy.
If you want my opinion Scientific Anglers XTS Gel spun is very good as backing , I have Jig-man 55Lb on a Syncrotech that I use for Tuna I get around 500 yards of string on there , depending on the diameter you should get similar on the Gulfstream, I am not sure what the riptides hold but I would go down to 30lb on that one and 50lb on the Gulfy. Dacron creates to much drag in the water GSP is better again there

I use Finns 50lb braid on my salt outfits.
I have 300+m on my 9wt reel. IT sets a good swim when there is a mac tuna on the other end

Good and strong and has great knot profile for running through guides
