    Re: D.I.Y Jigheads

    Ha Ha!!

I wondered about using this blow torch, it may end up costing more $$$ in gas if I kept it burning for a while, so Brandons' hook up to a gas bottle sounds like the better alternative. No doubt that's what you guys decided too.

The whole reason why I am thinking along this line is because the only sized ladle the gunshop had in stock was this one, which may be a tad small, and therefore it would lose its heat rapidly. Have to try it soon and see what happens.

My days as a recreational shooter are long gone, it became too involved keeping my gun license current, then having to make a secure gun cabinet etc etc. Never made my own ammo though.

Lets keep the thought of a Northside M&G going - I'm keen one of these weekends soon. We can put up a post in the M&G section, you guys can tell me which sized hooks to buy, I want some bream 1/20th or so in a size 1 hook, and you might like to borrow my Darter mold, fire up some gas, knock out 100 hooks of each, then take your own molds back home with you. Lead is so cheap if I bought 2KG ( more than enough for a session) at $3.00 a KG, that would be my shout to the whole days effort

On a side note, I just wanted to comment on Poodroos photo of a straightened Jighead. The species that we suspect did this, was a Snapper, and I agree 100% about our choice of hook for this species because of their hard mouth and jaw power, and are taking big risks using anything else at least as strong as the Gamakatsu Finese HW hooks. Mustads would work fine on bream and other species, and correct drag settings/fishing techniques stretch the boundaries of whatever you use, so there is no hard and fast rule on selection of hook, just finer tolerances come to into play with Snapper.

    Re: D.I.Y Jigheads

Yeah I'm not sure I want to trust anything but a heavier gauge hook on the jigs I'm using.

I've cast a few jigs heads now and actually got a chance to use them yesterday. I managed to get a 90cm bludger trevally on the first cast with one of my new jig heads. After about the 4th one of these in quick succession, the very tip of the point of the 5/0 HW Gama hook had rolled over but was otherwise still going strong. This was pulling as hard as i could on 30lb braid the whole time so thats not a bad effort for a little hook to withstand ! (will post some photos when i get them off of Matty_M)

Anyway, I'll try and get some time this weekend to take a few photos of my setup now and maybe even a little video with the melting pot in action. I modified 3 out of the 6 cavities to take the 5/0 hooks. Just had to enlarge the eye cavity slightly to accomodate the bigger hook.

Just a quick question for everyone with moulds, anyone else having trouble getting the keeper section of the jig to form properly? The round jig head itself is perfect every time but I'm having some trouble getting the barbed keeper section to come out properly. Probably only about half of them are coming out right. I'm going to have a play with different lead temperatures this weekend and try and put a bit of heat into the mould before i start as well.

Any pointers on this problem would be much appreciated.

    Re: D.I.Y Jigheads

Hey Richard I think you are on the right track

I had that problem with my sinker mold jigs mainly when I first started. I use to get the lead as hot as I could and also heat the mold a fair bit.. I found the lead tended to seep into all the small edges and half way up the shank of the hook!! After drilling out the poor hole (to make it easier to poor the lead in past the eye) I started to heat the lead less and didn't have the same problems

Scalem, your spot on withe blow torch mate! I was looking at getting a little kit like you have but found them to be worth much more than I was expecting especially when you couldn't fill up the tank So I ended up spending nearly twice as much on my setup lol. Works well with a 9kg tank lasting ages and 2 mtrs of hose. you can buy a number of different sized heads that fit onto a handle piece you attach to the hose. Will take a pic of it for you when I get a chance..

Keen for a day of melting lead!! Nico and I still have to modify our mold to get the size 1 - 1/0 hooks fitting into the 1/32 mold. but that shouldn't take too long.

    Cheers

    Hi Richard,

I think you are on to it when you are looking into temperatures. The lead will flow better into the barbed section of the cavity if it is hotter. Either get your lead hotter before pouring, or try get your mould fairly hot before pouring, or even better, get both hotter.

The other thing I did was open up the spout of the mould to a bigger size. Explaining it another way - where you pour your lead into the cavity may not have a large enough entry point, because the lead has to get to your barb quickly, before it starts to cool. Again, my dremmel was perfect where I chose a file size slightly larger than the entrance of the cavity. I think this was the biggest positive effect out of all the mods I made.

One more thing that might be the cause - if you are using heavier guage hooks than what the mould was designed, the lead does not have an unrestricted path to the barb. So I enlarged the shaft of the mold with the dremmel slightly. Not too much, as the diameter of the shaft then obviously becomes too bulky for the plastic to pass over.

I hope this helps. Let me know?

    Re: D.I.Y Jigheads

So who thinks this will work ( see photo)

Using the same modified round sinker mould as before, I made a few Jig Heads using my glue gun. Brandon, you wanted a way of making your jigheads lighter for bream, but you could only find a size 0 standard sinker Mould?? Here's the new generation ultralight jighead!!

    • Coat cavity with a light smear of veggie oil
    • Fill half the mould with hot glue, lay your blank hook into the cavity
    • Grab the other half of mould and fill it with hot glue, then join the two halves together
    • Presto!! Another usable jighead which appears proportional in size to the body of the plastic, in this case (photo) a 3" atomic
You will also notice some of the jigheads in the photo are darker in colour?? I dropped a split shot sinker into the mix before adding the 2nd half of the Mould, so I have a little extra weight if needed.

I have only stumbled on this this morning while experimenting - I may have found another very inexpensive way for people to make Jigheads themselves. And the good news is that the glue gun sets as hard as plastic and sinks in water, with very minimal smell of glue.

Also, the shank of the jighead is easy to make, just lay a little glue into the cavity, then shape it to have a few keeper ridges with the dremmel or a file or something.

If you think this won't work, guess again!! I had previously put a dob of glue ( without use of a mould, prototype was a little messy )onto a blank Jighead and tested the last time I was on the water. I got hit on the drop but didn't connect, so I am pretty confident I am onto something here...

    Re: D.I.Y Jigheads

    Great idea Scalem,

    your own resin heads !

I'll give some different lead temperatures a go tomorrow and I'm guessing it is the mould isn't hot enough. Got a bucks party today/tonight so might not be until tomorrow afternoon though

    Re: D.I.Y Jigheads

That does look very interesting Scalem!!! Love the idea of a splitshot in there too

Richard are your keeper's missing lead? or do they have extra lead creating a fin or sorts?

    Cheers

    Re: D.I.Y Jigheads

Hey there scalem, bought another jig mold last night on ebay couldnt help myself. Produces larger heads but not hard to modify. On the topic of painting you can get the powder coat stuff at the tackle warehouse. Just hang on the oven racks & heat up then dip in the powder & hang back in the oven. Probably not in the good oven, Peter.

Peter, they look great! You notice there is a growing interest in a M&G sometime in the near future?? And on the Northside?? You would have the biggest collection by far!!! Just grew by another Mould too!! We'll have to see them.

    Re: D.I.Y Jigheads

Well i gave the jig heads a test run today and caught some good flatties on them and didnt have any problems with hooks pulling or being spat out .

richard just watch out you dont heat the mould to much , we used to heat the sinker mould (with blow tourch) before pouring sinkers . I found out reading the instructions for the jig heads that it is not good to heat the mould with a flame , it says to poor a couple of moulds with out hooks to get it to temp . we did first poor with the hooks in and it worked well .

    cheers nico

    Re: D.I.Y Jigheads

im keen on a M&G we should make a list of what size hooks you need for your moulds so every one that goes can get hooks before hand for all the moulds and then we can take turns swaping moulds on the day , and maybe a bbq or a fish in the arvo afterwards .

Who has the best deals on Gamakatsu J90HW series hooks lately?

Hard to find stockists overseas with genuine articles.

    Re: D.I.Y Jigheads

This is good stuff all you inventive guys.

May just force a reduction in the steep price you have to pay for jigheads off the shelves, or one can hope so.

Thanks again for all the info, it has got the old brain working overtime.

    Cheers,
    John.
