Thanks for your contributions to this thread, if you can post up some photos of your setups that would really make some valiable additions to understanding what we need. We made a few at the M&G today ( Poodroo hosted ) but it certainly sounds like you guys have some extra stuff I would like to add to our collection. Some close ups of the finished products would be great too!

Hey there scalem, i have a set of 4 do-it jighead molds as i have previously informed you. Was trying to make your M&G today but had some work to do. I have a Lee electric melting pot & it is the best way to go. I have the Darter mold (same as yours) a round ball mold 3x 1/16 & 3x 1/8 i have modified this one to take smaller #1 hooks for Bream as well as the 2/0 & 3/0 hooks, also have a Shake-it round ball in 1/16 to 5/8 sizes & also a minnow mold in 1/16 to 5/8. It is a great hobby but if you get into it you end up with thousands of jigheads like me. I could put my gear away for 10 years i reckon & still not run out of heads. Will post some pix tomoz, Peter.

Do many people bother painting their jig heads? I see that most of the finished heads in this thread are unpainted. Is there much benefit to painting?
I have indeed painted some of my jigheads. What I used was some of the daughter's bright red nail polish with glitter. Durable, bright and does the job. Only drawback with most paints is that they have a typical paint smell which does disappear in time however.Originally Posted by Grunter71

Depends what you use I guess. I am experimenting with nail polish ( I have 2 teenage girls thank you, I am not that way inclined!)
The thing to watch is the smell of any of the paints you use. I guess anything that smells too bad might put the fish off. The nail polish smell seems to fade after a while, and I have caught fish on them, but can't say whether there is any advantage/ disadvantage over unpainted.
There is a professional paint you can dip your jigheads into, but again, hang the expense, if I put any more money into my backyard jig head making, I may as well pay full whack buying from retail chains.

Hi guys, don't know how I missed this thread!! I have been playing around with making my own jig heads for some time now. I didn't like the idea of paying over $80 for the jig mold (the cost of them when I first looked into it) so I decided to see what I could do with a standard round sinker mold!! Below is a Gif pic of the steps taken. Not as quick as pumping out 6 at a time but depending on what size hook you use you can do 2-4 per pour. I also drilled out the pouring hole as the lead even though it was very hot still stuck to the hook on the way into the main part of the mold. let me know if you would like to know more

PS: I just bought a do-it mold from the states while I was there. its a round mold that goes from 1/32 up. Needs to be modified to fit 1/0 hooks in the 1/32 mold though.
Brandon, that's uncanny! Have a look at my rushed snaps of my 1st attempt at making my own - what can I say but great minds think alike!! You must be a very clever guy!!
Two things I did differently to you. Your addition of the keeper wire is very innovative and smart, but because I could not find the suitable guage of wire, I came up with a crude but effective way of making a keeper barb on the shaft. A gentle clamping down on the soft lead with a pair of side cutters does the job nicely. You will see that the shape that the side cutter leaves is gentle on one side, but more acute on the other side - perfect for keeper barb on the shaft of the Jighead.
The other thing I did was to hone out the cavity with my engraver ( dremmel or whatever they are called!) so that I am left with a slightly more bullet shape than perfectly round. So I have a round at one end of the mold, and a bullet, slightly heavier at the other end.
One other thing, once you drilled out the area that the shaft of the hook lies, place a small amount of bluetac in the shaft to control both placement of your hook, and the flow of the lead as it comes through. Yes the bluetac gets a little soft, but placed right at the end of the shaft seems to be OK if allowing a little time to cool between pours.
It was Richard who revived the old thread, back when I originally posted it, I was surprised at the lack of interest shown, but I guess now people are really trying to find ways of reducing the spending, and making a hobbie of making their own, and there are also a lot more people using plastics.

Yeah all my gear arrived today but i haven't had a chance to do anything with it yet. Got to put a plug on the lead of the melting pot and then get a mask then i should be right to go.
Friday's weather is looking good so we will most likely get out Friday before work. I deifnately want to have some done before then. I'll post some pics up once i do a couple,

LOL thats funny Scalem!! I must have missed the thread of yoursI do like how far you have gone with shaping yours!! I tried Bluetac but it didn''t do it for me.. I had to use new stuff each pour because I used quite a bit of heat on the mold each time to enable the lead to pour past the eye of the jig. I like your cutout below the pour hole that would work well
I had a post up around 1 year ago or so with that pic too. The reason i didn't want to dremmel out the cavity is that I still want to use this molds for making sinkersAlso I was fishing mainly Bream and flathead in shallow water so as it was the size 0 sinker mold was too heavy for what I really needed
When my mate and I pull out finger out and give this do-it mold a run I will take some pics of what we do to make it fit the larger heavier gauge hooks.

well we (brandon and i ) got our finger out and gave the mold a go tonight . the mold works well there was only 2or 3 that were just short of lead (but will still work) out of about 50 that we poored , heres some pics .

Well done guys!! They certainly look the goods, you will have to post up the 1st fish they catch, and make sure we don't miss the post by putting up a title something like "D.I.Y Proof in the Pudding" or something like that.
What size are the smaller hooks, 1? I need to look at bream size molds more closely, as last time I tried I got a few fish on moldy cheese 3" at the pin. If you look at the weather for this weekend its not ideal for open water, so stalking bream is becoming more attractive where before, I'd stay home and mow the grass instead!!
What side of Brisbane are you guys? Perhaps BarUp and a few others on the northside would be interested in hosting a M&G, we had a few at Poodroos, but just weighing up where you guys live?? My place ( in Logan) is always a possibility too. Or we could hire a minibus and spend a few hours hitting the road up to Richards' place to catch a few reefies LOL
You'll have to knock the luster off those Jigheads now!!

This is what happens when you don't use the Gamakatsu Finesse strong wire hooks. There were a few jigheads which admittedly were one of the first batches that Scalem and I made and used the Mustad Aberdeen hooks. Not as strong but still looked okay. First decent fish I tried to drag in did this to it.

we are on the northside (brighton) i wouldnt mind having a get to gether and than mould some different jig heads from other moulds . I want to stock up on jig heads from our mould and than maybe somebody with a bigger/different mould wants to swap moulds for a while . Im hitting the brissie river tommorow to test them out (with nuggs) . We used 1/0 and 2/0 mustards and the smaller ones were size 2 bass pro ( i think) brandon got them in the US with the mould . for a pouring ladle we just use an old soup ladle (50c at salvos or life line) to pour and have a camp stove to keep the pot of lead hot also we use a blow tourch for extra heat on the laddle if it is needed .
