Hi Shane,
I can make weights 1/32, 1/16, 1/8, 1/4 & 2/3 of an ounce (all on one mould) and one other massive bass weight I can't remembers(will be purchasing a new mould soon for finer weights between 1/32 & 1.16).
My favourite for the Breambo's is the 1/16th with #2 hook (can use #8 - #1 for bream no probs) but can fish right down to next to nothing by trimming off some lead with cutters.
The mould I have is the basic round head jig that came in a kit from the Do-It website and I just mix and match to what works.
Oh and Gamakatsu chemically sharpened 90 degree jig hooks are a good hook to use.
Cheers,
Mark
Poodroo,Scalem or Mark...sounds like great little setups you guys have got...great thread as well....I'm just wondering what sort of gloves and mask you fella's would recommend...also would like to know what sort of container you are melting the lead in ??
I got a heap of tyre weights and plan on making some sinkers shortly..
Scott
Gidday Scott,
Masks can be found in supercheap, but NOT the basic dust mask. There's another one which says its suitable for use with fumes and has a little valve thingy. the nose also fits a little more snug because of a little rubber lining inside.
Gloves can be any cheap garden variety, but always keep a bucket of cold water right there at your feet that you can cool off in within a second. But keep water away from the molds.
The melting pot ..... it's rather embarrassing I don't have anything better yet, and you can buy professional equipment, but all at a price...... so for now my wife has not missed one of her aluminium cooking pots which has a massive "ding" in it to one side, to form a pouring lip. Ssshhh!! She hasn't noticed yet and doesn't read these threads much I am looking for an upgrade of melting pot, but as yet have not found a better solution, but really need to. It gets so hot the aluminium of the pot gets a little soft, but manageable.
Hope that helps.
Scalem
And I forgot, always pour in a well ventillated place, wear protective goggles and if you dont have any, sunglasses at the very least!!
Scalem
Mate...if she found out, that pot might end up with two big dings in it.so for now my wife has not missed one of her aluminium cooking pots which has a massive "ding" in it to one side, to form a pouring lip. Ssshhh!! She hasn't noticed yet and doesn't read these threads much
Hi Scott,
Scalem has hit it on the head with the safety gear, you can basically use any cast iron/old camping pot and a ladle (for smallish jig heads) or a pot with a spout for larger operations.
Lead has a pretty low melting point too which can be melted by any old camping gas burner.
Cheers,
Mark
Thanks fella's for the tips...I'll post up a thread about how I get on.
and I think I'll stay away from the missus's cooking pots on account of LGM's warning..lol..
cheers
Scott
good thread scalem , we just got a do-it jig head mould and the tips are handy . i was reading through the instructions and it says not to use tyre wieghts because it is hard lead and will make it hard to use as it sets quicker , if you are going to use hard lead you need to heat it up more and poor quicker to get good results .
Well I bit the bullet and ordered a Do-It mould, some hooks (lotsa hooks) and even went all out and bought one of the Lee Melting (Bottom Pour) Pots to make things a whole lot easier/less messy.
It'll now take me longer to make my money back but at least I'll be enjoying making my own jigs and catching fish on them (hopefully)
I'll post some pics here when i get my mould and do the first batch (if they turn out ok )
Richard
Well done Richard
Which mold did you end up getting ordered? Very interested in seeing the results. NicoDR, let me know which mold? Tyre weights too hard? Oh well, so far I have only been using my cast net sinkers, but I am glad you told me this, I had my eye on a barrell of tyre weights at the metal recyclers.
Scalem
Hi Scalem,
Ended up going with the Pro-106 mould which is 5 of the 3/8 round jig heads in a row with the collar and barb.
I would have liked to go for a mixed weight one but none of the others could accomodate a 4/0 hook in the 3/8 apart from the one you have but it not's rated for the heavier hooks which is something I wanted to make sure I could do.
I also bought a 100 pack of 4/0 and 5/0's in the Eagleclaw 635 (Seaguard Finish) and 50 of each of the Gamakatsu 604 Heavy Wires in 4/0 and 5/0 to see if i can get them to fit. Otherwise I could have some hooks for sale
Richard
Ive been reading up on about making jigheads, and im keen to start. The problem is that i havent done much fishing with soft plastic's yet so i dont know what to go for. I only recently bought a boat and enjoying going out into the bay, and picking up larger fish than i get in the estuaries( bream and flathead).
So any info on weights of the jigs, hook size and brand would be appreciated . I would like to be able to have just one mould that does multiple sizes that i need.
