I was thinking about this post the other day - as said, I wouldn't personally keep one.
But 'record speaking', we should only see a world record from an impoundment. Max length on 'wild' barra is still 120cms!!!
IMHO - records are for someone who trains all their life to run 100mtrs in under 9secs, climbs mount everest with prosthetic legs.....when you talking record fish, even though there is angling skill and knowledge involved to better your chances, at the end of the day, there is a LOT of luck involved and anyone with a line in the water can get lucky.

i had a simillar senario a jewfish, during the recent floods (northern nsw, evans and ballina). i wasnt aiming at a igfa record. however i still got a buzz outa the possiblity of winning the largest fish competition run by the northern satr(local paper) the fish was an estimated 30-35kg when landed. the largest fish been caught on the same day nudging 32kg. i kept the fish in hope it would be heavier. however it only wieghed 30kg(the next morning). i was gutted to say the least. however none of the fish was wasted. i have 4younger brothers. would i do it again? im not sure. it would depend on the species and situation.
I think its fair that you keep your first big barra, how much longer is that fish going to live? and how many smaller barra/fish will something like that eat?
BTW what is the record for barra?
I saw a clip on you tube were they get a monster at the s-bends at shady camp I found an article on there website and it says it bottomed out 30kg scales! it would have to be the biggest barra I ever seen!

The Impoundment Record stands with Dave Powell of Cairns... the fish was 124cm in length and weighed 37.85kg (hope I got those figures the right way around? Memory is blank...). The fish was caught in the Barron Arm at Lake Tinaroo. There have been many, many World Record Captures at Tinaroo and there have been plenty more C&R captures that would elapse Records with ease.
As for keeping your first Barra... I can live with people doing that. I know many blokes that have fished Dams for weeks on end before catching their big bitch and puting her up on the wall... they have since gone onto to be great anglers that are C&R crazy (they even release Spaniards????????).
How many smaller Barra will they eat? - Who knows! Show me the evidence that they eat the 300mm Fingerlings... thats what I like everybody else would like to see!

How much longer is that fish going to live???..........enough time that mabey someone else might catch it again and have an equally enjoyable moment that you did.
In your country (Darwin NT) those big fish are the ones that PROVIDE the fingerlings for you to catch in the FUTURE, therefore they deserve releasing.
I totally agree with theo, can anyone show us the real evidence that big barra consume the majority of fingerlings. Year classes are depleated for many reasons, stocking numbers, floods, drought, hot and cold snaps, other fish (damn catties down here) and BIRDS!!
I for one dislike the idea of killing fish in the HOPE that it mabey a world record, that lasts, who knows long, and know one knows who you are anyway!! Can anyone rattle off the current world record holders for all/any fish and line classes??? (without researching!!)
If you want to keep fish for for a feed, by all means do it. I I do, and enjoy it. I have no problems with that.
I will never kill a fish to prove my manhood or boost my ego, even if I THINK it is a world record fish. I would rather the photo of the spectacular creature hanging on the wall with my ego quietly in the background

The truth in fishing is you do what you want to legalities, If you take a fish well thats what you do. We could post backwards and forwards all day about how close to pass a fisherman, catch or release bla bla.
Rules are set for us to abide by. Most of us guys would like to be a world record holder would never get that title simply because we wouldn't weigh the thing but simply take a photo on the brag mat and put her back. The excitement of the moment is overriding the thought of records, bragging and where you have drifted too lol.
I voted yes for the fact that yes it would be a ripper holding the record for Barramundi but it would never happen I am far to concerned about getting it back in the water. All of us guys who release rather then take get just as much of a kick out of seeing the flash of the tail and a wet face by far than it being on the wall or in the belly.
We all have opinions, I think to much thought has gone into this one.
As far as if impoundment barra not being records who cares.

I am with you Tuna, I saw a 1000lb marlin caught in Cairns a few years ago and really felt sorry for the fish, just a magnificent specimen what a waste!

Id keep it 4 sure. At least i would've until i read Vet's post. If you were chasing records you'd more than likely have all the appropriate gear on board to record such a capture wherever you caught it. A barra like that would look pretty phatt on the wall though!
Barra&Jacks, go back thru the f/water chat forum to nearly a week ago. One of the guys was after similar info for Monduran barra (RE:New kid on the block). All lures/info mentioned there are worth a shot.

There is nothing stopping you weighing fish in slings etc., live, then releasing them for world records. There are pictures of that all the time in the IGFA quarterly magazine. Guys like Steve Mras specialise in catching fish like Thresher Sharks and Mako Sharks in Southern California, weighing them in slings on the land and then letting them go. I wouldn't be at all surprised if some of Schultzy's record Tinaroo Barra were done like that.

If we go armed with the length and weight that we have to beat,and we havent passed that then just a photo and weigh it with a witness then release it.
