Don't know but the same ugly mug in every shot.
    Hey Trev,
You are spot on no one can tell the size of a barra if it is not photographed on a brag matt as I have seen my fair share of barra photos and some 130 plus fish that don't look any where as big as 110 's. Depends on the agle of fish now close the shot was taken etc.
    Cheers Foxie

come on, come on, give us a hint day or night

Yes M.A.S.A do a great job but what they are sugesting about removing the bigger barra to the salt might get a few complaints like this one. As for killing off the bigger fish, why does nature need a hand, have some people forgotten the fish kills we had this past winter. Lots of big girls died and not all that die float so twice as many fish died than what you seen or where told about. I have been tagging nearly all the barra i catch in monduran for about 2 yrs now to see how and where they move in the dam then M.A.S.A want to release them down stream. This does nothing for the research that others do without pay to help in this cause of restocking.
    Cheers Moggy
Don't get too upset Moggy. M.A.S.A put on average 100,000 barra into Monduran every year and their permit from the DPI allows them to release only 6 barra a year into the upper (fresh) Kolan River.
MASA's hard work has turned Monduran into arguably the hottest barra destination in Qld ATM and anyone who visits the place will quickly realise that this stocking group are a little more proactive and foward thinking than most others.
It's ultimately up to us to decide what to do with the barra we catch BUT it's up to the stocking group to decide what type of fishery they want to build and maintain and anyone who professes otherwise is being a touch arrogant. No one is talking about getting rid of all the 120+ barra, there will always be some of them for the egos that must be satisfied. Every fishery in Qld is different and that's one of the great things about the stocking programs, if they want to build a fishery suited to the average family & tourist angler and not the barra specialist, well that's up to them (might be why 120,000 bass also go in each year).
Moggy have you had many of your tagged barra recaptured?
    Cheers

Trev, its the photo where you are wearing a brown shirt.

Mike. I totally agree with your sentiments regarding the MASA and the tireless work they do to provide us with this awsome fishery. Yes, its there say how its run, and yes its up to the indivildual to take a fish for a feed if they chose to do so. Thats what its all about. I like that idea and totally support it.

I just dont like the promotion of the 'cull because they want us to' mentality. At the briefing night for the Monduran family fishing classic the presenter said to a crowd of hundereds " we request you remove all fish over 95cm". THAT is what I disagree with. The fishermen take that as gospel and kill the fish because they are told to, not because they want a feed. Thats my sole dissapointment with MASA.

You say they want to build an impoundment for family anglers not speciallist fishermen. I agree its a great idea. BUT if they kill all fish over 95cm (long way short of 120cm) there will be stuff all fish left!! You will need to be a 'pro' to catch a barra.

    Steve,
Im with you on that, and we have had to deal with that up here for years, with ex-caravan park managers etc all telling the world to throw the big ones up the bank, as well as the Lions club Barra cull.
Those family comps are aimed at the grass roots of our past time, what sort of message are we sending our youth that its ok to kill a fish simply because it is big.
It makes a mockery of catch and release ethic in my opinion.
With idiotic groups like PETA and co. on out tail we are under threat enough, sooner rather than later I hope sanity will prevail down there.

Stock the hell out of all the dams, the more the better as far South and North as possible.

    Cheers

    Re: Monduran Barra - Etiquette

At the end of the day 150 boats at Monduran and probably more at Awoonga, a heap a Faust tell me their not worth catching regardless them being wild or not? from 60 cm to 130 or more I don't care they all get the same treatment and the only dammage is a sore eye from the camera flash , without MASA regardless of comments they have given us a true blue crack at Australia's Ikon Fish .

I love the battle in the sticks and those big fat LAZY fish seem to swim away much more then towards the boat

Dunno TB your the one telling the story?
    Thats a dam nice fish!
    Well done!

You must have the only 130cm bragmat in the country though, considering Shimano bragmats only go up to 125cm

    Re: Monduran Barra - Etiquette

Jason can you ask your friends at Shimano to make a 150 size Bragmat...Oh that fish is a 128 Caught at Faust on a night just before the ABT event last year....Scotty caught it .... not his biggest that goes to a 132 Awoonga lady...

    Re: Monduran Barra - Etiquette

IF people want a feed of fresh fish, that tastes great they should head to their local seafood shop, not kill the big barra and mix up some concochion to add to them, so they taste half decent. That's not what the imponondments are about.

    Re: Monduran Barra - Etiquette

    Hey guys,
i dont want to burst your bubble, but has anyone checked their Shimano brag mat against a calibrated tape or any other credible measuring device......well i have and my old brag mat was out by 25mm. That is to say the mat accuately measures 1175mm by calibrated tape at the 1200mm mark on the mat. My mate checked his and his mat was out by 20mm.....worth trying for yourself !!!

    Cheers Nomad
