Thread: Surprise Bass

    Re: Surprise Bass

Some towns are trying to be pro active with their weir removal. Norco weir in Casino has been removed due to it being obsolete. However there are still 3 weirs left and one of them is for town water supply. I have heared that some weirs are going to be heritage listed which makes removal even harder.

I think watching fish try to climb a larger weir it is one of the most disheartening things to experience. I have seen this many times and think things are slowly changing in regards to promoting and enhanceing fish migration. There are several legislative policies that require new culverts and bridges to accommodate for fish migration and to rehabilitate existing weirs to provide for migration.

If people didn't have to water their lawns and gardens, and businesses like the one my brother in law works at didn't leave their kitchen taps on for the 5 hour evening rush, then maybe we wouldn't need another dam.

    Oh well

Hi mate , bass are good for kids i bet he loved seeing it in no way is this angled at you at all , just reading through the whole post reminded me of our little creek and the story behind it....
....... i have a spot on the upper talle creek that has been smashed , i fished it for 8 years(catch and release obviously) , on numerous occasions saw the same 2 guys fishing it over about a year just keeping one or 2 fish here and there. i havnt fished it for about a year now , goneski , those one or 2 fish that are taken from a wild and natural place has stuffed it up completely , i have mates that still try it and ..nothing....the funny part is one day i asked them to have a look in their keeper net and they had 2 fish around 20cm in there , and i said arent they a bit small? and started ahuge argument where one of the old guys came towards me with a knife and said he was going to kill me , so it must have touched a nerve somewhere , but i scarped out of there shot home, rang the dpi, they were about 20 mins as they have a fisheries guy that lived close by and they got pumped not just for the fish but for the fire they had going as well in a total fire ban , anyway sorry to bab on , just a little story from the creek behind our house.

Great to see the young people enjoying themselves, however things arent as simple as some believe.

Before people advocate destroying weirs in rivers careful consideration has to be given as to why they are there in the first place. Personal experience saw NSW State Fisheries commence a policy of weir removal the result being destruction of the ability for hydrographic instrumentation and hydrographers to monitor the States water resources. People advocating this approach would be the first in line to scream when illegal water extraction resulted in no flow in the river because no control of extractions was in place.

Considerable tax payers dollars have been expended to create this monitoring network, I have seen the do gooders completely destroy the ability to monitor the delivery of irrigation water in one of the States major catchments thru construction of a fish ladder.

OK not all weirs have been constructed for this purpose, however once again who will be first in the line of screamers when they cant get a drink from the tap, food and clothing for their family or flush the loo.

Think prior to making big picture statements there may be detail that will have catastrophic ramifications.
