I am a Novice with a capital N. My depth sounder switches off after approx. 2 minutes and I have to restart it. Any idea's other than buying a new sounder.

When it starts, scroll down to 'diagnostics', then press menu, it should indicate that the transponder is attached and working. More importantly, it should indicate the input voltage, this is where I think you are having a problem.
There is also a self test function in that menu too.
Hope this helps.

They are designed to cut out if your boats battery voltage is too low, or current drain is too high (short circuit). You SHOULD get a warning message first tho.
Did you change any wiring, like lights lately? Check the input voltage with a multimeter. If its 12v like it should be, then your sounder is stuffed.
