Hi Kevin,
there was a fishing comp on the 12th & 13th at callide Dam of this month, and there was no barra caught. (plenty of turtles there)

Just wondering if there has been any report of barra from callide yet, i know there was a big kill in winter. It will be a shame if it killed them all as they were just getting to the real trophy size in there.

well that is a shame then. it was a great dam to fish at.
Read the fishing monthly and they are very positive about the up comming summer, still belive there are plenty of Barra in there, more so the below the magic meter but still quality fish. It has been stocked again and we will all be taking those classic big callide fish again soon. Full credit to the callide stocking group, It would be a very dishearting thing but they are bouncing back.

Mate was there last week all he caught was four turtles all on lures not a touch from a barra.
cheers rossco
Spoke to Elaine Sanderson from bileola on the northern tour and she had stated that some locals where catching some small barra but very hard to com by. Sounds like only a very small amount survived and the yellas have taken over most of the barra haunts.

Nice to see you on board Moggy

Mate From what I read was, since stocking there have been 300 000 fish released, from the local stocking group? Speices would be Barramundi and Yella's with the incling of barra being primary , but thats what was said in the mag. So either belive it or not thats up to you.
Cheers Nath
Yea I went to the comp o the 13th and threw every thing in the box from classics to soft plastics but not a touch... loads of trophy sized barra on the banks, such a shame.
NNNNNNNOOOOOOO
I hate hearing this lets hope they get it stocked quick and in a few years there will be planty of 10kg fish to be have !!!!

That is very sad news indeed.
Are the renouned red claw still around?
To be honest though what are peoples thoughts on this - Is there a point in stocking more Barra if weather conditions in the future are going to become more and more unpredictable/un-stable?
I suppose this question can be applied to all other badly affected fish kill dams but from this post, it seems that the majority of fish were killed off hence why re-stock it with Barra? Being one of the more southern barra fisheries, are there others who think they should maybe concentrate on stocking other species.

I Have no doubt that it need to be stocked again with barra, the main reason for the kill is the low water level in the dam. if it had been full i would be highly unlikely that there would have been as big a kill. as there is more water for the barra to hide in and get there temp to the right level.
Fish kills occur naturally in the wild as well.
I reckon ramp up the stocking, stock the hell out of every viable dam in the land.
The more the better.
Barra occur naturally further south than the Mary so I dont see a problem in stocking Lenthalls.
Callide, well we are in serious drought..........but it will break. Stock that dam like crazy.
Weather patterns change yearly, that was the coldest winter we have had in recordable history.
I do believe in having seperate fisheries though. Bass dams should be that in my opinion, and Barra dams should be Barra.
