i don't know about the rest of all you,,,, but i've always opted to have a swivel in place as a primary "join" for the line to attach to the leader,,, and also to use as a sinker "stop" when not fishing the lead right at the hook shaft,,
probably due to habit more than laziness,, as i could always utilise a blood or surgeons knot to join the 2 lines together,,, and elliviate the possibility of a 2 knot join failing opposed to 1,,,
but i've noticed over a short period of time,,, that the ""quality"" of swivels are diminishing quite quickly,,,
sure,, under no load they do there job admirably,, but under a bit of load/pressure,,, they don't,,,,, well they don't ""swivel"",,, and i end up with line twist,,
most of the cheapo brass barrel swivels i have left alone,,, (woolies brand especially),, and i mainly buy what i think is medium range (price wise) brands that ""normally"" do the job well,,, until lately,,,
ball bearing swivels are great if your fishing for marlin,,, but the average estuary fisho doesn't need this heavy armanent especially at the cost ball bearing swivels
demand,,,,, $2-$5 a piece in some instances,,, but you have a swivel that does its job,,,,
so i 'spose the reason behind this post is to see what the rest of you all have experienced,,,, do you use swivels on every occassion,,, or not at all
thats my whinge for the day over,,,,,,,,, back to work choppa
can it get any better??????????????,,,,,,,,,,,,,,http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hgG_TxEPaQE

Stay away from the black cranes they come apart!
I prefer to use Shogun swivels
As most of my fishing these days is lure work i seldom require a swivel. I did however come accross a lot of very dodgy swivels about 8 yrs ago sold as seahorse branded (most likely from the same supplier as most other brands of lookalikes and packaged with thier logos) I have dumped all the remaining stocks I had of those swivels and bought new swivels of a different design ex japan and they have been excellent. I cant say read or imagine what japanese writing says so I can't give you a translation for branding. I did buy then thru the Yo-Zuri / Duel site tho.
Jack.
i'm also a big fan of the shoguns,
all the others seem to fall apart or corode.
cheers

Shoguns for me in most cases but I still have a few packs of the cheaper ones. Just go up a size and discard after use. I have found ballbearing swivels are the only ones to work under load

I get SPRO swivels from the US in bulk - the ducks guts imo
If I buy locally then same as mentioned - shogun

these the ones greg?
Lippa - yeah mate - great strength in small sizes - great for the teethies - no bubble trail
I just use the shoguns. They seem to do a reasonably good job of reducing the twist from my Alvey.
Cheers

years ago went through a phase where I only used brass rings. Hopeless for line twist of course :-)
Do the ball bearing swivels fill up with silt/crud/corrosion in an estuary setting? I know they work well off shore. Hmmmmm I wonder what sort of flathead lure a big ball bearing snap would make with a nice chem sharp red treble...........
I don't use anything but ball bearing swivels these days but you can buy them in estuary fishing size's from specialised fishing stores like the local fishing stores have them but places like BCF they become a bit rare
Cheers Nick
I do the same as you Choppa but still buy el cheapo swivels. The quality has gone down but haven't had one break on me yet. However, they need to be changed frequently. Last winter I used the same swivel for one week, catching many bream, but by the end of the week it had gone rusty. Not good. Change them every day now.
