Photo's From 4 Barra Dams In Qld That Ausfisho's Can Explore

Hi we noticed a lot of new members asking questions about the Barra Dams in Qld so we have put together some photo's of the Dams for you to have a look at. You might like the look of a particular dam and decide to plan a trip there over summer.

In one year on Ausfish we have met up with really nice people and hope to keep doing so in the future.
We wish you all the best on your trips and hope to see you in the camp or on a Barra Dam one day.

The first Dam is wuruma Dam. Camping is free and the nearest towns are Monto and Eidsvold about 50km away. There was a big fish kill there last year when the water level was low. Only small boats can launch at the moment. When it rains (see 13% photo) Wuruma had fantastic Barra fishing and was lush and green a couple of years ago. If you are passing by check it out and when it rains make sure you check it out. Camping is very stress free & pets are allowed. Helen Abdy is a good contact in the area if you need up to date info - she writes for a monthly magazine in qld.

It will take us another hour or more to load up the other dams photo's so please hold any feedback off until we finish all 4 dams thankyou.

Callide Dam is near Biloela just over 10kms from town. Like most of the Qld dams at the moment it needs rain. They did have a fish kill but Barra are still there. No camping is allowed at the dam so you will need to book accomodation in Biloela e.g. caravan parks. Try and stay out of town if camping as trucks can be loud etc.

You can get good up to date information from Norm & Marell at the Tackle shop in Biloela.

The ground is very hard at the ramp and many launch from the bank.

At it's peak many fish were caught from the bank at Callide.

If you are in the area call in and have a look & do some recon & a spot of fishing.

Lake Monduran is 20ish Km North of the town of Gin Gin.

If you are travelling up the Bruce Highway make sure you stop in Childers and grab some kingaroy peanuts from the van as you drive through town - they are the worlds best and go well with cold summer drinks.

The pies at the bakery in Gin Gin are pretty good as well. For this reason no diets should be started on fishing trips!

Monduran has very roomy camp grounds not far from the dam wall. Wide open country views for campers and water views for those in the house or cabins.
Tip: If you want more camping room & serenity don't book a specific site just ask to camp down the back. This is also a good tip if you are turning up in the middle of the night like we do - you keep the neighbours on side. The site is around 10 acres.

Big amenities blocks are excellent with big fridges, bbq's, jug, toaster and 4 big tables in each. A kiosk with milk, ice, bread and basic supplies and last minute fishing gear is open most of the day. Kelly and Rob are the managers and have helped many a fisho out of a tight spot. Rob has experience boat building etc.

It's great to see the aussie tradition of the camp fire is going strong at Monduran. They have supplied truck rims to keep your fire hot & your coals from blowing away etc. Tip: Don't forget the marshmellows and collect some wood thats dead on the side of the road.

Monduran dam is big and fans off in to around 5 arms for over 20kms. There is a great map in a current qld fishing mag - keep a copy of it for all your trips.

Adrianne Kampf is the in camp fishing guide. You will see his van close to the kiosk. He can take you out for a few hours - you don't have to go for the whole day etc and this way it might give you a good idea of what the fish are doing and he can show you where to be careful when motoring as Monduran has lots of timber. Tip: If you see him have a chat and atleast get info on the location of stumps etc.

Brett Jones guides on wknds mainly and can be located in a big fishing/outdoors shop in Bundy. He has guided on the dam for years and has a great record. He does whole day trips.

The boat ramp is concrete with parking close by. Fishing has been great this week and Monduran has huge barra. They only lost a small amount to the cold winter. Monduran is around 4.5 hours from Brisbane. Check out the net site for more info. You will find it with a quick search etc.

Re: Photo's From 4 Barra Dams In Qld That Ausfisho's Can Explore

Lake Awoonga has been widely reported on so we won't bore you with too much detail. The Dam is massive and stretches for 20k's or so up the Boyne River - it's beautiful out the back so make sure you have a look.

It didn't lose too many fish to the cold which is good news. This weeks fishing has been awesome with camp figures of 15+ fish landed some days by travelling fisho's. For many it was their first barra - awesome. Some locals landed close to 20 in a boat one day.

It's has a huge main basin and most of the timber was cleared. It has around 25% of Australian bird life. The fish are huge but everyone knows that by now.

The camp used to get overbooked by about 500% but now it's run by Maryanne and Frank who will help you have a great trip. If you give them a call they will let you know if the campers/guides are catching Barra etc. The camp sites are small but the views fantastic - ranges and water etc. Some who want more boat room choose to stay down the road or motels down the road etc. Gladstone is about 20km's away. You could do worse than to have a counter meal at the Tannum Sands Hotel it has a great view.

The ramp is 2 lanes wide. The concrete but it's running out however gravel is being dumped so you can launch and retrieve your boat etc. There is one central amenities block and a smaller camp kitchen, small fridge, jug etc. Fire places are set out and hot plates provided at some which is great. There are walking trails around the dam. The kiosk has ice, milk and barra gear etc.

Currently there are3 individuals writing and producing DVD's/Books on Awoonga barra. Anything produced by these local guys is a must have for budding barra fisho's. The produce the most up to date info on Awoonga Barra. These guys are Rod Harrison, Jason Wilhelm and Johnny Mitchell - all members on here. Rod and Johnny guide on Awoonga. Net searches can find them etc.

It's a long trip so make sure you get a sxy coffee or 2 on your trip and take a break every 2 hours. Take some friends barra fishing for the first time - make sure you take the girls too!!!

Hope to see you on a barra dam soon. We might even convoy it up with some of you this summer.

Hope this helps someone out. Cheers Kel (Catches all the fish) & Lyndon

    Hey Kel & Lydon,

Great post guys: I have one query regarding camping "down the back" of Monduran- If one is to elect to do this, can you/how do you charge your electric motor batteries ?

    Regards

Re: Photo's From 4 Barra Dams In Qld That Ausfisho's Can Explore

Forgot to mention there is a free camp out the back of Awoonga the Boynedale camp has 2 toilets, it's fenced with big trees, tables and huge fire pits. You might be able to get a small boat in the water but big boats won't be able to launch or retrieve until the water level is a higher.

    Kel and Lyndon,

Excellent, very well done, sure there is a lot of people can get some great ideas of where to head. (Some are probably packing the boats and gear as we speak)

    Congratulations and well written.
