Thread: Whats the fascination with bream fishing?

Re: Whats the fascination with bream fishing?

I guess this forum was aimed at the elitist form of bream fishing (Hard & Soft lures) ... rather than baitfishing. The luring side of the sport is really good fun as it is an active form of fishing against what can be a cunning / finicky fish to catch that require light gear Add to this so many different scenarios - flats , oyster racks , snags , deep water , weed beds , bridge pylons , reef etc etc ..... & the little bream becomes a decent adversary ..... Hence the use of pretty specialised gear & a fair bit off it ! (You can easily use 4 types of outfits in a session.... & thats where the $$$ come into it)
One other point is the access to great fisheries right around the country & most at our doorsteps .... There are very few fish that fall into that category.
:undecided: ..... About the big flash glass boats with 250HP on the back ..... Not for me ! ..... I'd be too scared to take it into the racks & aside from bream & bass fishing what do you do with it ?....... But If you fish Tournies for $10,000 + .... so be it ... Nagg

I agree, in a way. I can't see the value in buying a boat in excess of $50 000 just for a few species. sure they would be great to fish from.......but $50 000??? I love bream fishing but found it a little sour for the moment.....glad I haven't spent $50 000 for a fish I'm a touch bored with!!! Sean

I think when you target a particular species it becomes an obsession. Knowing your target, where to find it, best baits, best times, rods, reels, etc.. Look at Blackfish fishers. Bream is a good adversary and the first ever fish I caught. Now I am after a different species and the rules have changed. New ball game. Cheers!

I fish for bream because I am ordered to do so by my wife. They are the only fish that she will eat. Duty done this winter, the freezer is full of fillets and will last for months.

There are a lot of large Jew fillets in there too but it seems that I am the only one who appreciates Jew in this household.

Ah well, bream by day and Jew by night. Life is okay.

I've fed my wife Pearl Perch caught that day and she said, and I quote "I think I like bream better". And I'm not sure I don't agree. Pearl Perch are a very bland flavour. Mind you she loved the snapper more than anything and I probably agree there, along with the Parrot.

    Each to their own.

Surf bream are great fun, good size and taste a treat. And I can catch a lot more surf bream off the shore than I can Pearl Perch.

I'm not one for the "artistic" form of bream fishing. Mullet gut on a number 1, 13' rod and an alvey near a rocky headland thankyou.

Just look in the media mate. Big dollars, big prizes and attractive sponsors. It's a profile fish, just as much as Barra and Bass as a sporting fish.
The marketing that goes into it is pretty big considering.
As stated there is skill involved to target bream, especially on artificials and especially under all weather conditions. It takes some skill to lure a fish and even more to find them.
Tournament fishing with big $$$$$ on offer can attract fishers onto the scene as well.
Valid Question and plenty of valid answers.

I think for a lot of them the fascination lies in catching and getting a picture of THAT FISH. Sure they may be fairly easy to catch at a certain size, but the older they get, the craftier they become. Excactly the same with cod, the little buggars are much easier to fool than the big old beasts that lay under the heavy timber and don't even look at certain lures. I know a lot of people think that they are just dumb fish, but they don't get big by being stupid.
If this is the case it can become a lifetime pursuit.
But then again there are just some blokes out there that just get just have to have the very best gear that money can buy. ( I wish I was one of those blokes, I buy the very best gear that MY money can buy......... I really have some crappy gear !!!)

i am having pearl perch for lunch there even more fun to catch and taste a hell of alot better why fish for bream when u can catch huge fish that give you a run for your money and if u think bream go hard for their size i think a mangrove jack would out do a bream any day pound for pound.

Jesse i don't think you know exactly what your talking about because your saying pearl perch give u a run for your money well you have only targeted them on like 60lb lines so i dont think a 1 kg pearl perch will give u a run for your mney and compare a thirty cm jack to a 30cm bream depending on what line class. Lol jess sorry for having a go at ya.
